In the mid 1970s, Cathy Tarkanian gave up her daughter for adoption after becoming a young mother at the age of 17. However, she never stopped missing and wondering about her.

Years later, in April 2010, she received shocking news from a social worker that her daughter, who was adopted and named Aundria Bowman, had gone missing from her family home at the age of 14 in 1989.

Determined to find her daughter's whereabouts at any cost, Cathy left no stone unturned. She put out flyers, spoke to her daughter's friends, contacted the police, followed through on the smallest piece of evidence and even hired a part-time detective to get to the truth. She never gave up hope, and after a grueling period of 10 long years, Cathy finally learnt her daughter's fate.

The documentary Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter chronicles Cathy's dogged perseverance in finding information about her long-lost daughter in the face of unbelievable circumstances.

In an August 2024 interview with Tudum, White revealed that Charlize Theron had approached him with the idea of directing this documentary after reading Cathy's incredible story in The Atavist. He said:

“I remember in that conversation how incredibly passionate Charlize was. She didn’t feel like a superstar when you were talking to her — she felt like an adoptive mother who felt passionately that this was the worst case scenario of what could happen with adoption.”

Charlize Theron remarked on Cathy's determination:

"Cathy was resilient and followed her intuition all the way to the end to get answers about her daughter.
"I think that sort of tenacity in the face of a bunch of people telling you you're wrong is something that really resonates with audiences. We so often are taught to trust our gut, but rarely see it in action."
