Since the announcement of its renewal, season 3 of What If…? has been promoted as the final season of the animated anthology series based on Marvel Comics. Episodes began airing on Disney+ on December 22, 2024, with new episodes released daily until December 29, 2024, when the series will officially conclude.

While the reasons for the show's ending after season 3 remain unclear, few theories have emerged among MCU fans that may explain the decision.

The most popular theory suggests that the conclusion of What If…? is linked to several upcoming MCU projects like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Fans believe that these new projects might introduce a different perspective on the MCU, prompting the decision to conclude the show after three seasons.

Marvel's What If…? is concluding with season 3, for now

As mentioned earlier, the curtains are set to close on What If…? with its third season, which will wrap up on December 29, 2024. However, there appears to be a glimmer of hope for the show's renewal in the future, especially after certain storylines have been explored within the MCU through other projects.

This hope arises from comments made by Brad Winderbaum, Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios, during a live interview with Phase Hero that aired on November 14, 2024. While discussing the recently concluded Agatha All Along season and projects like What If…? season 3, Winderbaum stated:

"I cannot say too much, but I’m just gonna put this out there, that there are bigger universe reasons why it feels like What If… ? needs to coast in for a landing right now. It doesn’t mean there can’t be more What If… ? down the road, but it is part of a bigger tapestry that’s being woven in real time."

What has been the audience's general reception towards the show?

With only a few episodes left until its conclusion, What If…? season 3 has been performing well. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show has an approval rating of 89% from critics and 77% from audiences. These ratings are pretty solid, especially considering it is the show's third season, as previous MCU and Disney+ television shows have often struggled to surpass the two-season threshold.

Amon Warmann from Empire Magazine writes about the show and says:

"A strong final outing for the MCU’s flagship animated series, with bold storytelling leading to fun, satisfying results. This exploration of Marvel’s weirder and wilder side will be missed."

Additionally, Allison Rose from FlickDirect mentions:

"Visually, What If…? is extremely well done, featuring nuanced colors throughout and sharp details everywhere, making it a standout Marvel Studios production."

That said, the show's reception on Metacritic is also impressive. Although the recent season's reviews are not up yet, the show has garnered significant positive attention overall. It has a Generally Favorable Metascore of 72 out of 100 and a User Score of 6.5 out of 10 from audiences on the platform.
