Betty Broderick's life inspired the second season of the Dirty John Netflix series, titled Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story, which was released on the streaming platform after initially debuting on the USA Network on May 31, 2020. The season comprised eight episodes, each with an average run time of approximately 44 minutes.

The divorce between Betty Broderick and Daniel T. Broderick III is often referred to as one of the messiest divorces in American history, and there are clear reasons for this label.

For those unversed, Betty and Daniel initially had a typical marriage until their relationship began to deteriorate somewhere around 1983, when Daniel started having an affair with his legal assistant, Linda Kolkena, roughly 13 years after his marriage with Betty.

As Betty and Daniel went through their divorce proceedings, tensions escalated as Betty accused her ex-husband of alleged misconduct, claiming he had tampered with important documents and sold their shared property without her agreement. This led to a series of aggressive actions from Betty that finally culminated in her killing both Daniel and Linda.

Who is Betty Broderick? Delving into the true story behind Dirty John

Betty Broderick, the main subject of season 2 of Dirty John on Netflix, was born on November 7, 1947. She grew up in Bronxville, New York, and attended Maria Regina High School in Hartsdale, New York, and Eastchester High School in Eastchester, New York. She completed her graduation from the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the Bronx.

In 1965, Betty met Dan Broderick at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, and shortly after this initial encounter, the two began to feel a mutual connection. They briefly dated and eventually married in 1969.

Betty welcomed her first child with Dan in 1970, followed by her second in 1971, her third in 1976, and her fourth in 1979. While Betty managed the household both financially and in other respects, Dan pursued his Doctor of Medicine degree and attended law school. He was soon employed by a law firm in California, which prompted him to relocate his family to his job location.

In 1982, Dan employed a legal assistant named Linda Kolkena to assist him with his work. However, by 1983, Betty began to suspect that Dan was having an extramarital affair with her, a suspicion that was confirmed when Dan moved out of their home in 1985.

What ensued next is, to date, one of the most talked about cases in the history of America's judicial system, characterized by a messy divorce, occasional destruction of property, and double homicide of Dan Broderick and Linda Broderick.

Did Betty Broderick kill Dan and Linda Broderick?

Seven months after Dan and Linda were married, Betty Broderick infiltrated the couple's Marston Hills home. She shot them while they were sleeping with her recently purchased Smith & Wesson revolver. As per The LA Times, Betty turned herself in without stimulation and admitted to her crimes.

During the court proceedings, it was disclosed that Betty had removed all modes of communication from Dan's room before murdering him and his wife, leaving no room for him to call for help. It was also divulged that Dan had not died instantaneously and that Betty and Dan spoke briefly before the latter finally breathed his last.
