Netflix is set to release Senna on November 29, 2024. The six-part drama TV show is based on the life of Ayrton Senna. He was a Brazilian F1 racer regarded as one of the fastest race car drivers ever.
Created in partnership with the driver’s family, the show chronicles the life of the three-time Formula One champion. The series explores his on-track and off-track personality, personal relationships, and long-time rivalry with French racing driver Alain Prost.
Who is Senna?
Senna's father built him a go-kart using a lawnmower, and he started racing go-karts at the age of 13 before competing at the 1984 Brazilian Grand Prix. Besides being a three-time F1 world champion, he also had 41 victories, 65 pole positions, and 80 podiums under his belt. He achieved all of these titles between 1984 and 1994. The show captures his on-track victories and portrays his life's challenges until his fatal crash at the San Marino Grand Prix in Italy on May 1, 1994.
The TV series pays tribute to the F1 driver 30 years after he succumbed to his injuries after crashing into a concrete retaining wall during the race. He is seen as Brazil’s national idol and regarded as a great sportsman and local hero. According to a USA Today report, his funeral was reportedly attended by more than a million people.
After his death, the Brazilian government declared a state of national mourning for three days. During his funeral procession, the green-and-yellow flag of his country was draped across his body. Formula 1 made some changes after his death. Most notably, they added a pit lane speed limit and placed limitations on the bodywork aerodynamics of cars.
Ayrton Senna was not just any F1 racer to come from Brazil. At a time when his country was embroiled in significant political and economic turmoil, he became a symbol of hope, pride, and patriotism for his fellow countrymen. In a USA Today interview conducted in 2014, Bruno Senna, his nephew, who was also briefly an F1 driver, said:
“His determination, perfectionism, sense of justice and patriotism made Ayrton a very special person to Brazilians.”
He went on to race for Lotus and McLaren. The Brazilian race car driver proved his talent and garnered millions of fans across the globe. To this date, many F1 drivers pay tribute to him on his death anniversary.
