Season 1 of Yellowjackets, the popular thriller drama series that premiered on Showtime on November 14, 2021, is now available to stream on Netflix. The series’ recent addition to Netflix has only amplified its popularity.

The series explores such themes as survival, trauma, cannibalism, and adolescence, among others. The realistic depiction of these themes has prompted the viewers to wonder if the series is based on a true story. While Yellowjackets is not based on one particular true story, it is inspired by several historical events.

The synopsis of the show on Netflix reads:

“When their plane crashes in the wilderness, a girls soccer team must do whatever it takes to survive. As adults, they reckon with their brutal decisions.”

As per a report published by Deadline on January 15, 2024, the third season of the series has been greenlit and will premiere in 2025. However, only season 1 of Yellowjackets is currently available on Netflix.

Yellowjackets loosely draws inspiration from some real-life events

In the thriller series, several teenage girls, following a plane crash, are forced to resort to cannibalism in order to survive. Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, the creators of the show, revealed the inspirations behind the series while speaking with NPR on December 31, 2021.

The duo admitted that the book Lord of the Flies and the film Alive were “pretty formative” for them. Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, is a civilization vs. savagery tale that revolves around a bunch of boys stranded on an island following a plane crash. While Yellowjackets’ premise is obviously similar, the show deals with the story with an all-female team of survivors.

Alive, the 1993 film starring Ethan Hawke, is the adaptation of the 1974 book of the same name. It retells the tragic Andes Flight Disaster. In 1972, a young Uruguayan rugby team was stranded in the Andes mountains for 72 days, following a plane crash on the way to a game in Chile.

16 people survived the Andes Flight Disaster. However, later on, it was revealed that they had resorted to cannibalism, as per a report published by Dexerto on May 31, 2023.

Some inspiration may have come from the Donner Party as well, as per a report by Forbes published on November 19, 2021. In 1846 and 1847, a group of American pioneers tried to relocate to California from the Midwest on wagons. Following a detour, they were stranded in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and this forced them to indulge in cannibalism to survive.

What happens in Yellowjackets?

The story takes place across two timelines. While the first strand of the story depicts the events of 1996, the second strand follows the characters’ trajectory in the present. In 1996, a team of talented female soccer players fly to Seattle for a game. However, on the way, their plane crashes.

They are stranded in the wilderness for around nineteen months. While they try their best to adapt to the new surroundings at first, the winter makes procuring food extremely difficult. Left with no other options, they take to cannibalism.

In the present day, the school the survivors attended is arranging a reunion party. Past traumas and resentment come to the fore as the survivors face each other once again. It seems the past continues to haunt them to the present day, and if it comes out in the open, they might be in trouble.
