"We are reviewing information."- says George Gascon, concerning the Menendez Brothers' case
As per the report by TIME, Los Angeles prosecutors concerning the Eric and Lyle Menendez case have been reviewing new evidence.
District Attorney George Gascon recently revealed during a news conference that once the new evidence concerning this decade-old homicide is reviewed, the judge would be able to reveal if a resentencing or retrial is possible in this case.
Gascón stated:
“We have not decided on an outcome. We are reviewing information.”
The new hearing related to this case has been scheduled for November 29, 2024.
What is the new evidence that can open this case of double homicide once more?
A letter that Erik Menendez wrote to his cousin Andy in his childhood days is the new evidence that is currently under review. The letter supposedly corroborates claims that the brothers had made about their father and also has citings that Erik and Lyle were se*ually abused by him when they were kids. The letter was previously ‘withheld from trial’ in the 1990s as per reports from the US SUN.

Part of the letter, which could pave the way to a new trial read:
"I’ve been trying to avoid dad. It’s still happening Andy but its worse for me now. I can't explain it. He so overweight that I can’t stand to see him. I never know when it’s going to happen and it’s driving me crazy. I never know when when it’s going to happen and it’s driving me crazy."
The letter further read:
"Every night I stay up thinking he might come in. I need to put it out of my mind. I know what you said before but I’m afraid. You just don’t know Dad like I do. He’s crazy! He warned me a hundred times about telling anyone especially Lyle. I don’t know I’ll make it through this. I can’t handle it, Andy. I need to stop thinking about it."
Although no decision has been made yet about a retrial, there is a shimmer of hope for the Menendez brothers once more, with this letter in the spotlight now.
Alternatively, Roy Rosello, a musician and a former band member of Menudo also revealed that Jose Menendez sexually assaulted him, seconding Eric and Lyle.
Erik and Lyle Menendez shot their parents in their home
The Menendez brothers were sentenced to life in prison in 1996, for the murder of their parents Jose and Kitty Menendez on August 20, 1989. The couple was shot multiple times and killed in their Beverly Hills residence.
During the trials, the brothers revealed that their father used to se*ually, emotionally, and physically abuse them and their mother let it happen and didn’t intervene. Therefore, to safeguard themselves, they chose the option of murder, which according to them was done in self-defense.
The opposition however said that the Menendez Brothers killed their partners to get their huge share of inheritances as they were seen spending money lavishly on extravagant things post the double homicide.
After the huge success of Monsters season 2, Netflix is going to add a documentary titled The Menendez Brothers, which will replay this brutal homicide and for the first time in history, it will also have interviews from Eric Menendez, Lyle Menendez, and others.
The Menendez Brothers documentary will arrive on Netflix on October 7, 2024.
