All ten episodes of Nobody Wants This were released on Netflix on September 26, 2024. Created by Erin Foster, the romantic comedy portrays an unlikely romance that develops between two people of very different temperaments and backgrounds.

The official synopsis of the show reads:

“An agnostic s*x podcaster and a newly single rabbi fall in love, but can their relationship survive their wildly different lives and meddling families?”

Nobody Wants This swiftly climbed Netflix’s Top 10 list upon its release. The intriguing and entertaining subject matter of the series prompted fans to wonder if the story was based on a true story. As per Erin Foster, the show creator, the premise of the series is based on her own love story with her husband, Simon Tikhman.

“This show is based on the only good decision I ever made: falling for a nice Jewish boy,” Erin Foster told Tudum on September 26, 2024.

In Nobody Wants This, Adam Brody plays Noah Roklov, an open-minded rabbi while Kristen Bell plays Joanne, a s*x and dating podcaster who is not only free-spirited and extroverted but also an agnostic. Foster and Simon Tiknman are the Nobody Wants This real-life couple, on whom Joanne and Noah are based, respectively.

As per a report published by Elle on October 4, 2024, Simon and Erin met sometime around 2018. He reportedly told Erin during one of their first hangouts that whoever he married should be Jewish. However, like Joanne, Erin was an agnostic.

Nevertheless, a romance soon bloomed between the two. Foster converted to Judaism during a 10-week process at American Jewish University, and the duo got married in 2019.

Like the duo in Nobody Wants This, on top of their differing personalities, Erin and Simon also came from different cultural backgrounds. For instance, Simon’s parents were immigrant Russian Jews while Erin and her sister, Sara, came from a well-established entertainment family in Los Angeles. Thus, the Nobody Wants This real story is as dramatic as the fictional representation of it.

Erin spoke to Harper’s Bazaar on September 26, 2024, regarding their marriage:

“We couldn’t have been from more different worlds, and those different worldviews really put us in a unique position to have … not conflict, but challenges moving forward and starting a life together,” shared Erin.

Thus, the Netflix rom-com series fictionally recreates the events leading up to Erin and Simon’s marriage. Erin told The Los Angeles Times on September 28, 2024, that the series was a sort of tribute to her husband.

“I’m obsessed with Simon; he’s my muse. And this show is like a love letter to him,” she stated.

There are some deviations from the real-life story

Although the love story portrayed in the series by and large mirrors the real-life love story of Erin and Simon, the Nobody Wants This real couple, certain changes were made in the Netflix series to make the plot more intriguing.

For instance, Noah, Simon's fictional counterpart, is a rabbi. However, Simon himself was not one when he met Erin. Simon is the co-founder of a music management company and is deeply connected to his culture and religion, as per Elle.

Furthermore, Sara, Erin’s sister, was reportedly quite supportive of her and Simon’s relationship. However, Sara’s onscreen counterpart, Morgan, is not so. Thus, certain changes were made to the series to create more tension in the plot.
