Over the Garden Wall, the 10-episode animated television miniseries created by Patrick McHale for Cartoon Network was broadcast on the network from November 3 to November 7, 2014. The series' voice cast includes Elijah Wood, Collin Dean, Melanie Lynskey, and Christopher Lloyd, among others.
Based on McHale's animated short film Tome of the Unknown, the miniseries tells the story of two half-brothers, Wirt and Greg. They travel across an enchanted forest in search of their way home. On their journey, they encounter a host of mysterious and fantastical things.
The series remains popular with the old and the young alike, even a decade after its original run. Viewers have been able to stream the series on Hulu so far. However, there is speculation that Hulu will remove the show from the streaming platform. However, Hulu dispelled the claims, adding that the show would air on the platform. Read on for further details about the matter.
Is Over the Garden Wall leaving Hulu? Explained
Recently, a Reddit user posted on the Over the Garden Wall subreddit that the show was "leaving Hulu in 13 days". The post naturally upset many fans of the show. However, one netizen pointed out that the show is “always up for renewal” this time of the year. The user said:
“I think it's always up for renewal this time of year: I feel it's gotten down to the countdown before.”
While some agreed, others expressed frustration regarding Hulu’s alleged plan to remove Over the Garden Wall. One Reddit user wrote:
“So for it’s 10th anniversary it’s getting removed from streaming.
God I hate that.”
Several fans commented about how the show was similarly removed from Max. Yet others mentioned how buying a DVD of their beloved series would be the best way to enjoy it since that would allow them to watch it on streaming services.
The latest development in the matter, however, is sure to please the show's fans. On September 20, 2024, Hulu Support clarified on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the series was not “expiring” and that the badge showing the countdown would be “removed soon.”
Thus, despite the fans' initial concerns, the miniseries will not soon leave Hulu.
The plot of Over the Garden Wall
The synopsis of the series on Hulu reads:
“Over the Garden Wall is Cartoon Network’s 1st animated mini-series event that tells the story of two brothers, Wirt and Greg, who find themselves lost in a strange forest. With the help of a bluebird named Beatrice, they must travel across this strange land in hope of finding their way home.”
Wirt, the older brother, is shy and reticent, while Greg is free-spirited. Together, they journey through the unknown in search of their home. They encounter various supernatural phenomena in this strange land, and they are stalked by the Beast, who has evil plans.
The second half of the series presents a twist in the story: it is revealed that Wirt and Greg are inhabitants of the real world who fell into a dream following a mishap. The entire episode of The Unknown happened in their limbo-like dream. However, the series' ending also suggests that, although unreal, the experiences of the Unknown left deep imprints on the brothers’ minds.
