Sweet Tooth Season 3 hit Netflix shelves, with all of its eight episodes dropping on the same day on June 6, and just like that, the smash-hit Netflix original fantasy drama has officially concluded.

Based on the DC comic book series by Jeff Lemire, the series tells the story of a boy named Gus, who was born half human, half deer trying to look for a place where someone like him fits in the post-apocalyptic world. The three-season series depicts his adventure as he searches for a home and family after a mysterious virus wreaked havoc on Earth.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the show boasts an impressive 92% score from critics. With its consistent acclaim from the debut's 97% Tomatometer rating to Season 3's 93% score, it's no wonder why fans are slightly bummed that the Robert Downey Jr.-produced storybook dystopia is ending.

That said, the show coming to an end is not shocking news as Netflix has previously announced the series' renewal for a third season with a bitter footnote that it will also serve as a closing season.

Why is Sweet Tooth ending in Season 3?

Shortly after the streaming giant confirmed the show's third and final season, the series creator and showrunner Jim Mickle shared the reasons why Sweet Tooth is ending during an interview with Deadline.

Talking about his and Netflix's understanding about the show wrapping at Season 3 and why there won't be a Sweet Tooth Season 4, Mickle said:

"[I mean] it was always part of the pitch. The comic book ends very similarly to how the show ends, and it always felt like it was the natural ending for the show."

Mickle also mentioned the age of the cast members as it doesn't particularly fit the narrative perspective of the show if it were to continue with another season. The story revolves around young characters, and the aging cast members will pose a challenge later on as they will soon outgrow their roles.

Filming Seasons 2 and 3 was a race against time before the cast members grew up, and according to Mickle, they got lucky. Talking about filming two seasons back-to-back, he noted:

"It made making it incredibly hard, but it was really worth it and we just lucked out. Christian [Convery] is a full-on teenager now, as is Naledi Murray who plays Wendy."

Is a Sweet Tooth spinoff possible?

While the third season provided Gus' story with a fitting conclusion and despite Netflix opting out to renew the show, further on-screen storytelling could be possible in the future. As far as Mickle's perspective about the future of the series, there is plenty more context to explore within the Sweet Tooth universe.

The series showrunner revealed during an interview with Screen Rant that there are "discussions" being made. Talking about extending the show's narrative, he said:

"Yeah, we've talked about ideas, and definitely have some of what that would look like that I think would be very cool, that would be a very different turn of what it is, but that I think would fit very neatly into Jeff's world and the stories that he tells, and how we've told them."

That said, Mickle noted that any continuation of the fantastical drama hinges on the fans' demands and whether or not Netflix will be interested in it. There are no concrete details or plans as of yet, but Mickle's comments deliver a positive hope to fans of the show who are eagerly awaiting more from the Sweet Tooth universe.
