Yellowjackets tells a harrowing tale loosely inspired by real-life events

The plot of the show unfolds across two timelines. While the first strand of the story portrays the events of 1996, the second one depicts the characters’ trajectory in the present. In the 1996 timeline, a team of talented female soccer players flies to Seattle for a game. However, their plane crashes on the way.

As a result, they are stranded in the wilderness for around nineteen months. While they initially try their best to adapt to the new surroundings, procuring food becomes increasingly difficult with the onset of winter. Left with no other options, they ultimately take to cannibalism. Some lose their lives, while others manage to exit the ordeal, carrying a deep-rooted trauma.

In the present day, the school attended by the survivors arranges a reunion party. Past traumas and resentment resurface as the survivors face each other once again. The series seamlessly blends the past with the present, and the parallel pacing of the two timelines effectively highlights the effect of the past on the present.

While not based on a single real-life event, several inspirations behind the series can be pointed out. While speaking with NPR on December 31, 2021, Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, the creators of the show, revealed that the book Lord of the Flies and the film Alive were “pretty formative” for them.

While William Golding’s fictional text Lord of the Flies is a civilization vs. savagery tale that deals with similar themes as found in Yellowjackets, the 1993 film, Alive, is the adaptation of the 1974 book of the same name which retells the tragic Andes Flight Disaster.

In the Andes Flight incident, a few Uruguayan rugby players had to resort to cannibalism in order to survive, following a plane crash. Some inspiration may have come from the Donner Party as well, as per a report by Forbes published on November 19, 2021.
