The Chinese-American teenager Jentry Chau lives in Seoul with her great-aunt Gugu, who raised her after her parents' death. A week before her 16th birthday, Jentry discovers that she is being chased by someone named Cheng.
Gugu explains that she signed a deal with Cheng to spare Jentry for the first 16 years of her life. Honoring his promise, Cheng has now returned to steal her soul, which is tied to her supernatural powers.
To fight off Cheng, Gugu and Jentry set off to Texas, where they lived before moving to Seoul. The duo left their hometown in Texas after the 8-year-old Jentry unintentionally started a fire and burned down half of the Texan town. Jentry, who has the ability to shoot fire from her hands, felt guilty for her actions and suppressed her fire powers after that fateful accident.
Jentry's powers are reawakened on her 16th birthday
After arriving in Riverfork, Texas, Gugu urges Jentry to learn to channel her fire powers so that they can defeat Cheng and the Mogui, a parasitic demon working with Cheng to steal her powers. Soon after she turns 16, Cheng visits the two and gets into a fight with Gugu, who gets killed while protecting her great-niece.
Distraught, Jentry unleashes her fire powers on Cheng and sends him away for the time being. She realizes that her powers get triggered under stress. It also opens her third eye, making it possible for Jentry to see Gugu as a ghost despite her death.
By the end of Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld season 1 episode 1, Jentry realizes that her powers have opened a portal between Earth and the underworld called Diyu. The animal-like creatures from the underworld warn Jentry to close off the portal or face deadly consequences.

However, the couple betrayed Cheng and handed him ordinary robes, instead of placing the magical robes on their daughter. In anger, Cheng killed Peng and erased Moonie's memories. After the incident, Gugu decided to raise the young girl all alone.

He hands Cheng the robes and the latter successfully brings his daughter back to life. However, Cheng's daughter does not recognize him as her father and wishes to go back. A heartbroken Cheng regrets not considering his daughter's wishes before bringing her back to life.

Jentry finds Cheng's daughter and consoles the young girl, who hands the robe back to Jentry. However, Cheng attacks Jentry and stabs her in the chest, only to reveal that it was Kit wearing Jentry's skin the whole time.
Kit sacrifices himself in the name of love and succumbs to his death. Seeing Kit's dead body, Jentry puts on the robe and fights the Mogui to extract Cheng from within.
