The Netflix documentary miniseries Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action revisits the 27-season history of The Jerry Springer Show, a program with its controversial and dramatic content.

The show first aired on September 30, 1991, as a traditional talk show focused on political issues but underwent a major reformatting in the mid-1990s. The show transformed into the tabloid-style spectacle it became famous for. With topics ranging from adultery to family scandals, episodes featured profanity, physical altercations, and outrageous stunts like the "Jerry Beads" exchanges.

Produced initially by Multimedia, Inc. and later by NBCUniversal, the show was taped in Chicago until 2009 before moving production to Stamford.

It reached peak popularity in the late 1990s and became a pop culture phenomenon and reference in various media in the U.S. Despite its polarizing reputation, The Jerry Springer Show produced 3,891 episodes during its run.

The final taping took place on July 6, 2018, and the last episode aired on July 26, 2018. It marked the end of an era.

Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action is now streaming on Netflix, giving fans and critics alike a chance to revisit the show's legacy.

The Netflix docuseries Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action takes a probe on the legacy of The Jerry Springer Show, exposing the behind-the-scenes tactics and shocking moments that made it one of the most infamous talk shows in American television history.

According to a review by The Guardian,

“It was the most notorious talkshow in TV history, and this gobsmacking documentary shows that the people who worked on it still have no shame – despite possibly ruining countless lives.”

Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action sheds light on the denial and lack of accountability among many of those involved in the show, including producers who were caught on camera inciting guests into fury before their onstage appearances. This was all in pursuit of the explosive fights that became the show’s hallmark.

However, many of the producers featured in the series recall only the excitement of booking guests and chasing high ratings.

One notable figure in the docuseries is the executive producer Richard Dominick, who led the show from 1994 to 2008. Dominick worked at tabloids like Weekly World News and The Sun before joining the Jerry Springer Show. In the interview, Dominick expressed no regrets about the show’s sensationalist approach.

The series also revisits a particularly infamous 1997 episode titled “Klanfrontation,” in which newly initiated Ku Klux Klan members clashed on stage with Irv Rubin, the founder of the Jewish Defense League. The episode sought to explore whether the Klan members could renounce their allegiance before becoming fully entrenched.
