Background on Killer Relationship with Faith Jenkins

The Killer Relationship with Faith Jenkins uncovers lethal violence in close relationships. With prosecutor Faith Jenkins, the show examines each case in detail.

In Killer Relationship with Faith Jenkins season 3, episode 5, Jenkins unpacks the case of Jacquelyn Smith which shows how even close family members can have bad intentions towards their loved ones.

The crime

On December 1, 2018, Jacquelyn Smith was stabbed to death in Baltimore, Maryland. Her husband, Keith Smith, reported that she was attacked after giving some $10 to a panhandler.

Keith claimed he and his wife were at Valley Street in north Baltimore with his daughter, Valeria Smith when they saw a woman panhandler with a baby. He then slowed down the car at the request of his wife, who handed the homeless woman money through the passenger window. That's when a man who was with the panhandler stabbed Jacquelyn through the open window. He snatched her necklace and wallet and fled the scene.

Smith's tale made nationwide headlines as fears arose about the dangers of handing money to people on the street. However, the truth was that Keith Smith had committed the murder. He presented the killing of Jacquelyn as a random act of violence just to avoid the blame.

Investigation

Initially, the investigation focused on a female panhandler and her male accomplice. Not long thereafter, detectives began to uncover discrepancies in Keith's account. Motion surveillance cameras and eyewitnesses disputed certain aspects of his account.

In a strange turn of events, Keith's daughter, Valeria who was in the car with her father at the time of the crime made a shocking admission that her father's account was false. She revealed that Jacquelyn was stabbed by Keith in Druid Hill Park.

Cell phone records placed Valeria at the park at the time of the murder, another point that negated Keith's story. Valeria cooperated with investigators and helped them catch her father.

Resolution

In December 2021, Keith Smith was convicted of the murder of Jacquelyn. He was sentenced to life in prison, with no possibility for parole. Valeria, who was seen as an accomplice, got a reduced sentence after she agreed to testify against her father.
