Plot summary

At the start of La Palma, the Norwegian family comprising Fredrik, his wife Jennifer, their daughter Sara, and son Tobias arrive at La Palma in the picturesque Canary Islands for their annual Christmas vacation.

Meanwhile, the Norwegian volcanologist Marie Ekdal and her Icelandic colleague, Haukur, notice signs of an impending volcanic eruption that could lead to a deadly tsunami in the Canary Islands. When they inform their boss, Alvaro, he refuses to alert the authorities for fear of raising a false alarm.

Jennifer hears about the looming threat of a tsunami from her brother Jens, who works at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Jens urges his sister to leave the island at the earliest before the news gets out. With limited resources available for a large-scale evacuation, the authorities struggle to relocate people to safety without causing mass hysteria.

Jennifer and the kids get on a flight out of the island while Fredrik stays behind, hoping to find another way out. Nevertheless, the family reunites at the safe zone, whose location was publicly revealed by Jens (against the orders of his superiors) to give people a chance at survival.
