Lady in the Lake, an Apple TV+ original created by Alma Har’el starring Natalie Portman and Moses Ingram, among others, premiered its third episode on July 26, 2024.

After the last episode, the mystery remained as Stephan got arrested for the murder of Tessie. However, viewers were not given much information about Tessie’s death and her killer. The killer could have been Stephan the maniac or Reggie.

In episode three of Lady in the Lake titled 'I was the first to see her dead. You were the last to see her alive,' there are some big revelations. We learn Officer Platt knows about Cleo and her involvement in Summer's failed assassination attempt. We also get to know more about Tessie’s death as the autopsy confirmed that it was a rape.

Lady in the Lake's third episode also has Maddie telling Seth that Milton is not his biological father. The recent, fast-paced episode of this drama makes a lot of revelations concerning its main characters.

Lady in the Lake episode 3 ending explained

Cleo's struggles

The episode starts with a flashback as we see Cleo and her father. Cleo, who has seen poverty from a very young age, tries to help her father after he comes back home bruised, beaten, and with no money because of his gambling habits.

Later in the episode, the priest comes to bless Cleo’s son Lionel and tells her that there is no cure for sickle cell anemia. However, there can always be miracles that the Lord can perform.

Soon, Cleo has a moment of self-reflection. The scene goes to the present, where Cleo narrates to Maddie how she was on her own and deserved to drown. We do not get a clear idea about what and how this is connected to Cleo's death and what she is trying to say, but we do know once again as hinted that Maddie has a strong connection to Cleo's death.

Cleo goes back to work for Gordon again

Even after Myrtle's failed assassination, Cleo doesn’t lay low. She shows up at the bar and starts drinking even though Reggie tells her not to. Cleo loses control of herself in the bar, and after her confrontation with Gordon, her husband takes her back home. Later, she breaks down and tells Slappy about Leonel’s sickness.

In this episode, we also come to know that Gordon considers Reggie as one of his closest comrades. This could mean Gordon knows about the murder of Tessie if Reggie is the one who murdered her.

Maddie becomes self-sufficient

Officer Plat comes back to Maddie’s apartment, where they make love for the second time. In the morning, Maddie goes to meet her son, who seems unhappy about her late arrival. The two then go to Cleo’s shady apartment. Seth doesn’t like the smell of the apartment or anything about it. In the heat of the argument, she tells Seth that Milton isn’t his father.

Seth had already gone through Maddie's diary as he revealed to her and told her how he knows about her secrets now and who she slept with. Seth then tells her he doesn’t care to know who his real father is. He is happy to call Milton his dad, after which he exits and is dropped home.

Amid all the chaos, Maddie gets her first check from Bob, who is ready to partner with her, to tell her story and be a part of it, before he rejects her offer initially.

After Officer Plat comes to Cleo while she is at the dress shop, she reveals some details about the assassination attempt and even the car number. Because of this revelation, she has now let Gordon down. There is no safe space in the town for her.

However, later in this episode of Lady in the Lake, it is revealed that Gordon doesn’t know that Reggie had involved Cleo in the failed Summer assassination attempt, which Cleo figures out on her own.

Cleo confronts Reggie about the same and asks for his help to win the numbers game by knowing the odds so that she can take the prize money and go far away from this chaos. We do not know yet if Reggie will help her; however, if Cleo goes down, she will take him and Gordon down with her.

Bauer and Maddy, who have now teamed up to tell Maddie's story as Maddie wants to delve deep into the murder of Tessie, go to Doc Kornblatt, who reveals to them that there were skin cells found on the girl and the killer even attempted to rape her. Her hymen was broken as well. The doctor also revealed how the killer could have been someone else other than Stephan.

Later in the episode, Stephan asks to meet with Maddie. As the episode is about to conclude, she goes to meet him, after which the credits roll. To know more about what Maddie and Stephan will discuss about the death of the child, we will have to wait for the next episode.
