Lady in the Lake episode 4 came to Apple TV+ on August 2, 2024. The fourth episode of Lady in the Lake, titled "Innocence leaves when you discover cruelty. First in others, then in yourself" is so far the most happening episode of this miniseries.
Episode three concluded with Maddie on her way to interview Stephan for more answers. The fourth episode picks up from there with Stephan and Maddie officially being introduced to each other. This episode molds Stephan, Maddie, and Cleo's character arc with multiple revelations and events as it proceeds.
The fourth episode of Lady in the Lake ends with the death of Cleo. Cleo Sherwood is killed by Reggie. Although the previous episode showed us a glimpse of the killer, his face was never revealed until the end of episode four.

Maddie finally meets Stephan
The fourth episode of Lady in the Lake starts with Maddie interviewing Stephan. Stephan thought that Maddie came to him because she revealed how she connected with him in the letter. However, now Stephan knows that Maddie is only here for his story as she takes out a recorder and a pen and paper to jot down points.
Maddie, however, convinces Stephan about how they have to fake this interview as this is the only way she is allowed to meet him. Stephan soon asks Maddie about how she knew Tessie’s body would be near the lake. Maddie, after hesitating, reveals that during her teens she would go by the lake with the boys; however, discovering Tessie that day was a fluke.
Throughout the interview, Stephan doesn’t admit that he killed the Durst girl. We also get to know that Stephan is a man of faith as he questions Maddie about the Sabbath. He then reveals an experiment that made him sick while he was a virgin. We also get a flashback of Stephan’s past where he is seen in a medical ward, throwing up, which makes us aware that he was the subject of some kind of cruel experiment called Operation Whitecoat.
The shoot out
Officer Davis and Platt go on a run to catch Robert Buxton, one of Gordon’s men who was a part of the failed assassination attempt in the previous episodes. The officers go looking for him inside a theater. As Robert gets spotted, he tries to make a run but fails when he gets shot. However, it’s a good and a bad day for Platt as his comrade gets shot in the head and dies, but he gets promoted.
Later in the news, when Gordon gets to hear this story, he comes to know about Cleo’s involvement in the failed assassination attempt. He then talks to Reggie about this matter and asks him to clear the mess.
Cleo plans her escape
With this episode of Lady in the Lake, things started to go in Cleo’s favor. Reggie calls her and tells her how to win the race as the episode commences. Cleo too plans accordingly so that she gets the money and also has a perfect plan to flee. However, Gordon finding out about her involvement later on has surely put her at a lot of risk.
Maddie is 'The Baltimore Star'
Maddie goes to meet Bob at the office and finds out that her story on the Durst girl has taken the paper and the city by storm. She is officially a part of The Baltimore Star now, and everyone in the news office starts respecting her.
Later, when Maddie comes back home and Platt arrives, they make love twice. Maddie tries to talk to Platt about Officer Davis’s death. However, he doesn’t open up completely to her, as he believes she can use this as her next story, which he would not favor.
Maddie then tells Platt about how her husband wasn’t the first man she had slept with. Later, Maddie gets a vision of her past, where she was making love with Allan during her teenage days. Maddie tries to stop Allan midway, which he doesn’t like, and he later leaves.
Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah
In the last few minutes of this episode of Lady in the Lake, Cleo celebrates Christmas with her family. Although her mother doesn’t seem happy with Cleo's involvement with Gordon, she tries to convince her. Later, Slappy arrives with gifts to make everyone happy.
Stephan, on the other hand, manages to use his zippo and burn Santa in the jail. While everyone in the room panics, Stephan is the only calm prisoner. He gets up, walks slowly, and escapes prison.
Maddie, on the other hand, has the worst Christmas as Allan humiliates her publicly by telling everyone how she has used Tessie’s story to fulfill her lost dreams. Even Seth agrees with Allan, because of which Maddie slaps Seth.
Later in this Lady in the Lake episode, Maddy gets the shock of her life when she meets Stephan at her apartment. Stephan didn’t come to harm her, as he confirms. He then stops Maddie from freaking out and tells her that he forgives her for lying to him and telling him that she connects with him.
As Stephan leaves, Maddie locks the door quickly and rests on the floor, sobbing and breathing heavily. Stephan next goes to the lake; however, the officers start to track him down. After a failed self-drowning attempt to baptize himself, Stephan gets arrested once again.

Reggie kills Cleo
After Cleo and Slappy are finally happy on Christmas, they walk the street talking and kissing. Meanwhile, Reggie, while sobbing, keeps a watch on Cleo. Later, when Cleo goes near the lake to open her prize, Reggie kills her and dumps her body in the lake. Although there is no dedicated scene in this episode that shows the murder, it is now confirmed that it was Reggie who killed Cleo. After dumping her body in the lake, Reggie falls on the boat and hides.
But how will Maggie use this story to garner fame? Maddie can be an opportunist, but she has a good heart, and that is evident from the first four episodes of Lady in the Lake. Will she connect Cleo's death to Stephan as he gets arrested at the same time and in the same place?
The later episodes of Lady in the Lake are expected to reveal more about Cleo’s death and Maddie’s involvement in it post-death.
