Disney+ Japan has added a new Japanese series, Land of Tanabata, to its list. Directed collectively by Girl Gun Lady (2021) directors Yûsuke Taki, Takahide Sano, and Hayato Kawai, Land of Tanabata has released the first few episodes for its first season, which will be a 10-episode long run. The show became available on major streamers on July 4, 2024.
The show is based on a Japanese manga series titled Tanabata no Kuni, written by Hitoshi Iwaaki. This science-fiction manga was published in BIig Comic Spirits magazine from 1996 to 1999. The showrunner confirmed the adaptation of this manga into a live-action series in January 2024.
The plot of this live-adaptation manga series is about a student named Yoji Minamimaru. Yoji seems a bit immature, but he possesses a very weird superpower. He can create small holes in everything and anything. Although everyone initially labeled his superpower useless, Yoji's powers come to his aid when he has to save the world from a major world crisis.
The official synopsis of the series reads as per Rotten Tomatoes reads:
"Yôji Minamimaru, nicknamed Nanmaru, is a college student who has the supernatural ability that allows him to "create small holes in anything"; with this seemingly useless ability, he must confront a crisis threatening the entire world."
The show stars Kanata Hosoda, Ryôko Fujino, Hiroshi Mikami, and Takayuki Yamada among others.

1) Kanata Hosoda as Yoji Minamimaru
Kanata Hosada is a 22-year-old actor reigning from Tokyo, Japan. This Japanese actor has previously starred in multiple movies and shows like What If There Were a High School for Ikemen Only (2022), One Summer Story (2020), Dragon Zakura (2005), and more. His role in Machida-kun no Sekai (2019) earned him awards and also got him nominated for several others.
In Land of Tanabata, he stars as the protagonist Yoji Minamimaru/ Nammaru, an absent-minded student with the superpower of making holes in anything and everything. However, his unconventional ability doesn't go to waste as he gets to help in a world crisis with his superpower and is also useful when his professor goes missing.
2) Ryôko Fujino as Sachiko Hagshimaru
Ryôko Fujino is a 24-year-old actress reigning from Kanagawa, Japan. Previously, she has starred in movies and TV shows like Solomon's Perjury Part 2: Judgement (2015), Hiyokko (2017), Miyako ga Kyoto ni Yattekita! (2021-present) and more.
In Land of Tanabata, she stars as Sachiko Hagshimaru, a kind and supportive friend of Yoji Minamimaru. When the professor goes missing in the series, she helps in the investigation along with the protagonist, Yoji Minamimaru.
3) Hiroshi Mikami as Masami Marukami
Hiroshi Mikami is a Japanese actor and director who has previously been a part of multiple movies and shows, including Anata Dake Mienai (1992), Peacock King (1988), Dousoukai: Rabu Agein Shoukougun (2010), and more.
In Land of Tanabata, Hiroshi Mikami stars as Masami Marukami. More information about his character is not available at this moment.

Land of Tanabata is now playing on Hulu and Disney+. The show is not available to stream on Netflix. There is no English version of the show available as of yet.
