The 31-year-old singer-songwriter died on October 16, 2024, after suffering a fatal fall from the third-story balcony of the CasaSur Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The circumstances around his death are still being investigated, as of the time of this writing.
According to a preliminary autopsy report, Liam died of "multiple trauma" and "internal and external hemorrhage." Additionally, an initial toxicology report found the presence of multiple drugs like cocaine, crack, and benzodiazepine in his system. Allegedly, he had also consumed "pink cocaine," which is a mix of ketamine, MDMA, methamphetamine, and opioids, before his death.
In the moments leading to his death, Payne had reportedly trashed his hotel room and was exhibiting erratic behavior to an extent that concerned the hotel staff. Reportedly, the receptionist called 911 at least twice, notifying them that the musician was heavily intoxicated on drugs and alcohol and that his life was in danger.
The Steal My Girl singer had spoken candidly about his struggles with alcohol and drug addiction in the past. He had revealed that he started drinking heavily while touring with One Direction, adding that he also grappled with suicidal thoughts. However, he seeked treatment for his addictions and told fans in July 2023 that he was six months sober, following a 100-day stint in rehab.
