How did Matthew Perry die?
Matthew Perry's death on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54, shocked the world, including his fans, friends, and family. He was found unresponsive in the hot tub at his Los Angeles home, and his passing was later determined to have been caused by the acute effects of ketamine use.
Authorities also noted the presence of buprenorphine, a drug used to treat opioid addiction, as well as coronary artery disease, which may have contributed to his death. The combination of these factors, along with ketamine’s impact on both the cardiovascular system and respiratory function, was ultimately responsible for the fatal event.
At the time of his death, Perry had been receiving ketamine-assisted psychotherapy sessions to treat his anxiety, and he had been undergoing the treatment in the weeks prior.
However, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner confirmed that the ketamine found in his system was not related to the therapy, and the high levels in his blood indicated the drug had been obtained outside of a medical setting.
This revelation led to an investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department, which eventually resulted in charges against five individuals—Perry's personal assistant, two doctors, and two drug dealers. The authorities alleged that these individuals were involved in procuring and administering the lethal doses of ketamine to Perry.
Matthew Perry’s struggles with addiction were well-documented throughout his life, and his openness about his journey to recovery earned him recognition as an advocate for addiction recovery.
Despite his past challenges, his death from ketamine-related complications was both tragic and unexpected.
