The Thai thriller series, Master of the House, was released on Netflix on July 18, 2024. It's a tale of greed for wealth and power, as the death of Roongroj, Asia’s leading diamond tycoon and the head of Theva Gems, brings about a power struggle between his two sons.

Complicating the matter is the fact that Roongroj married Kaimook, a housemaid, shortly before he died. The official synopsis of the seven-episode series reads:

“A family enters a power struggle following the death of their patriarch, who leaves behind his diamond empire — and the housekeeper he recently married.”

The series explores the disparity between the lifestyles of the rich and the non-rich, as much of the story focuses on Kaimook.

Her elevation in status due to the marriage with Roongroj creates tension in the household. While Roongroj’s death is ruled out as an accident, it's revealed that Kaimook knows things others don't.

As the series opens, a group of butterflies is seen on the screen. Flying butterflies stand for freedom in the story, and they are a recurring motif in the series. Roongroj, a wealthy diamond dealer, falls to his death.

His funeral is attended by his two sons, Phupat and Mavin. Each eyes the massive wealth of their father and wants to inherit the same. However, they are surprised to know that their father had married a housemaid before dying. That housemaid is Kaimook.

Then begins a battle for inheritance that moves forward the plot of the series. The plot is thickened when it's understood that Roongroj’s death may have not been an accident after all but a carefully premeditated murder.

The series depicts the vastly different lives lived by the wealthy family and the housemaids. The family, including Roongraj, often mistreats the maids. One maid even killed herself, unable to take the abuse any longer, which sets up the stage for the twist in the last episode.
