The 16-year-old star student of Warren, Michigan, Danyna Gibson, was stabbed to death within the school premises by her classmate and former friend in September 2018. The incident took place in the early morning hours at The Fitzgerald High School as Danyna was stabbed four times by another straight-A student, Tanaya Lewis.
The reason for the attack was determined to be a love triangle wherein a male friend was involved with both girls. However, as The Detroit News reported, there had been no altercation preceding the attack.
The upcoming episode of Mean Girl Murders, titled Straight A Killer, chronicles Danyna Gibson's murder. The official synopsis reads:
"At a Warren, Michigan, high school, it's the smart, ambitious kids who rule the school. Two of the best and brightest are seniors, Danyna Gibson and Tanaya Lewis. And when they compete for more than just grades, the results turn deadly."
The fifth episode of season 2 of Mean Girl Murders airs on April 22, 2024, at 9 pm EST on Investigation Discovery.
Danyna Gibson was an aspiring engineer
Danyna Unique Gibson was born on November 20, 2001. She lived with her parents Angelina Ford and Preston Gilbert. Gibson was a student at the Fitzgerald High School in Warren, Michigan, and was known to be an outgoing person.
As a straight-A student, Danyna participated in the school's cross-country team and was part of the marching band and the color guard. She was a part of the school robotics club, the school student council, and was also on the National Honors Society. She contributed to the city's social justice youth program called A Generation of Promise.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Danyna's father Preston envisioned his daughter becoming a valedictorian. Danyna's friend from school, Kayhla Almond, shared with the media outlet:
"If this was somebody else (Danyna would) be hugging everyone. She worked too hard for this."
Her aunt described her as a shining beacon of light while her junior from school called her the support system of her friends' circle. Danyna Gibson wanted to pursue a career in computer engineering in college, according to Fox 2 Detroit.

16-year-old school student Danyna Gibson was fatally stabbed by her classmate with a kitchen steak knife on September 12, 2018. The Fitzgerald High School recorded an incident around 8:30 am local time when another of the top students of the class and fellow National Honor Society member, Tanaya Lewis, brought out a steak knife and stabbed Gibson four times in total - two times in the back and twice in the chest.
According to the Detroit Free Press, one of the stab wounds was deep enough to injure the heart and puncture the lung. Tanaya reportedly "smiled and laughed" as she chased the victim in the class, per The Detroit News.
The school's resource officer, who was alerted to the incident by the students' screams, performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the victim before she was driven to the St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital by paramedics.
One of the students in the class and a witness, Francesca Pascua, mentioned that the incident took place in the Economics class, per Oxygen. The class wherein the stabbing took place had around 30 other students along with the teacher present at the time of the attack. However, none of the other students were injured.
The motive behind the crime was established to be a love triangle between the two girls who were friends at the time, per ABC News. The court documents suggested that another male friend was involved who had allegedly been dating both girls.
