In the Paris Olympics 2024, a controversial boxing match between Imane Khelif from Algeria and Angela Carini from Italy is being compared to a scene from the TV show South Park. In that episode, a man fights and defeats a woman in the ring, and people use this comparison to criticize the real-life match.
In a recent post on X on August 1, 2024, Endless Wokeness shared four pictures on the platform out of which two were from South Park and the other two pictures were from yesterday’s boxing match in the Paris Olympics. While comparing the fictional scene from the sitcom, to the reality of the match, the post caption reads:
“The Olympics did the South Park meme.”
The post influenced the series of comments by the X users which started a trend of men do not belong in women’s sports.
“Men do not belong in women’s sports!” commented an X user.
In all the comments on the post, there is also a comment by the owner of X Elon Musk.
“South Park predicts reality again,” commented Musk.
In the boxing match on Thursday, August 1, 2024, in the Paris Olympics, Imane knocked out her opponent Angela in just 46 seconds.
“Can’t believe they allowed a biological male to compete in an Olympic boxing match versus a woman,” commented another X user.
The incident didn’t just remain limited to comparison with a fictional scene from South Park but also fired up a political argument between the left and the right.
“This is disgusting. The left wants to normalize men beating women. But “us republicans” are the sexist ones who hate woman right?” said an X user.
“No real man on the right would ever touch a female with his hands. The left does it for fun. Smh,” added the same user.
“None of this is funny. Women are getting brutalized in a way that should land the assailants in jail. The Olympics and other organizations that promote this male ab*se of women need to be sued into oblivion,” said another X user.
Why are people drawing the parallels between the match and South Park?
In a 2023 women’s world championship, two boxers were disqualified from the championship because they did not meet the eligibility criteria to fight the match. These boxers were Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif. They disqualified both athletes from the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championship because of failing the testosterone and gender eligibility tests that are mandatory to pass.
The boxing association mentioned that the athletes did not undergo any testosterone test, but were examined by some different tests, details of which remain confidential. People have shown their outrage at how Khelif was allowed to fight in the Olympics when she was earlier disqualified from the women’s world championship.
Khelif initially appealed to the court to reconsider the decision by IBA, but later she withdrew her appeal, and hence IBA’s decision to disqualify her remained statutory. Then the decision remained in the hands of the International Olympic Committee to finalize if the athlete should be allowed to fight in the Olympics 2024.
The brutally injured boxer Angelina has asked for justice and the trend suggests that people are supporting her.
