Apple TV+’s Midnight Family is an All-Spanish medical drama starring the likes of Joaquin Cosio and Renata Vaca. The narration revolves around an ambitious medical student played by Vaca, who spends her night saving lives using her family-owned ambulance, in the sprawling Mexico City.

The first two episodes dropped on September 25 with the official synopsis as follows:

“Marigaby Tamayo is an ambitious medical student who spends her nights saving lives throughout a sprawling, contrasted and fascinating Mexico City aboard her family's privately owned ambulance.”

Titled Pilot and Heart, the first two episodes quickly set the tone for an intense narrative. Marigaby Tomayo, Vaca’s character, finds herself struggling to keep up with her medical school demands due to her work as a night-time medical examiner. Her father, Ramon Tamayo, played by Joaquín Cosio, supports his daughter in helping those in need while battling his own troubles.

Midnight Family premiered its first two episodes on September 25: A recap

The opening episode immediately delved into Marigaby’s challenges. As a second-year medical student, she tries to balance her academics with her paramedic work. When she receives a ‘B’ in an exam, Marigaby struggles to come to terms with it, considering she is easily the most gifted student in her batch.

However, she already possesses the practical skills needed to be an emergency doctor, which is shown in the way she takes care of a woman in distress. Physically abused by her intoxicated husband, Marigaby and the team arrive in a chaotic setting, and eventually manage to extract the woman and take her to the hospital.

Things take a turn for the worse during their celebratory drive back home. Stopped by the police, the family is fined for expired permits, and Diego Calva’s Marcus, the driver, is arrested. The Tamayos lose their earnings and plot the release of Marcus from prison.

The second episode quickly delves into the Tamayo family dynamics. Marcus is released from prison after his ex-girlfriend, Crisis, helps him. Julio Tamayo, the youngest in the family, ends up learning about his father Ramon’s heart condition. Julio overhears a conversation between Ramon and his ex-wife Lety. Lety wishes to take Julio’s custody in exchange for funding Ramon’s treatment, which he refuses.

The episode also results in Marigaby losing her first patient. After attempting to save a baby and his father from a burning building, Marigaby fails to resuscitate the latter but is able to save the baby. This weighs heavily on the protagonist, but she has to quickly move on and focus on her job.

The family then responds to a call and saves multiple tourists who have been electrocuted. This is followed by Julio attempting to raise spirits by suggesting that the family cleanse the ambulance vehicle as he claims that the vehicle has been haunted by the spirits it has transported.

The family comes to terms with Ramon’s health and eventually takes him to the hospital. The Midnight Family episode ends with some turbulence between the siblings, with the family dealing with a range of financial, and health issues.

Needless to say, Midnight Family’s first two episodes have proven to be heartwarming. The characters in focus are lodged in a perennial struggle to focus on things important to them while dealing with various obstacles that they face. The series is a must-watch, especially for viewers who enjoy medical dramas in the vein of Grey’s Anatomy.
