Who is Ed Gein?

One of the most infamous murderers, he is often referred to as "The Butcher of Plainfield," and his crimes are so heinous that they have earned him a place in this title. Born in 1906 in Plainfield, Wisconsin, Ed Gein lived an isolated lifestyle under the domination of his deeply religious and controlling mother.

Following her death, his obsession with death and the human body became very dark. He started exhuming bodies from graveyards across the city, using the skins and bones to make household items that have a repellent nature; hence he is one of America's most notorious criminals.

The history of his murder timeline started with the alleged killing of a tavern owner, Mary Hogan, in 1954. Bernice Worden was confirmed as his second victim killed in 1957. When Bernice Worden went missing, police officers raided Gein's house, and what they found shocked them. Worden's body was found, badly mangled, and there was evidence of his grave robbing.

Gein confessed to killing both women and also admitted to exhuming multiple bodies from various local cemeteries. The details of his crimes shook the world and would later become influential for modern horror films and characters.

Gein was declared mentally unfit to stand trial after his arrest in 1957. He spent the rest of his life in various psychiatric facilities until his death in 1984. Although Gein was convicted of only two murders, the extent of his grave-robbing and the macabre objects found in his house kept him a fascination in the media for decades. His legacy continues to be an inspiration in pop culture, especially horror movies like Psycho and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
