German series Murder Mindfully kicked off Halloween celebrations when it dropped on Netflix on October 31, 2024, bringing a strange blend of murder and mindfulness. Tom Schilling stars as Bjorn Diemel in the series as a mafia lawyer who attends a mindfulness class hoping to find a work-life balance. However, as he develops a mindful lifestyle, he also becomes a murderer and a mastermind for the mob.
The 8-episode comedy crime series promises dark and thriller elements that revolve around Schilling's Bjorn character discovering new coping strategies—including murder and how to get away with making trouble. He gets away with murdering two of the most dangerous people in town and becomes the proxy mafia leader, all while taking deep breaths and doing mindfulness practices he learned.
Based on Karsten Dusse's bestseller of the same name, the new Netflix show also casts Emily Cox, Peter Jordan, Sascha Alexander Gersak, Murathan Muslu, and more.

Bjorn gets away with murders in Murder Mindfully
Murder Mindfully stars Bjorn, a mafia lawyer who is having problems balancing his work and being there for his wife and daughter, Emily. His wife presents him with a mindfulness class that can help, and while he is skeptical at first, the series continues with Bjorn adopting a mindfulness practice in his daily life.
As the title implies, Bjorn commits murders, but he does it in a "mindful" way. He tries to reason why he has to resort to killing someone, like his client, the mafia leader Dragan. Since the mindfulness class taught him to focus on his goal—spend quality time with Emily and tune out the rest— he ended up killing someone who kept him from spending quality time with his daughter.
Throughout the series, Bjorn adapts to his new mindful lifestyle in the most drastic and dangerous situations. He keeps calm while lying in front of police officers or another mafia leader. He faces challenges with a psychopathic ease, like disposing of a corpse and carving his way out of trouble.
At the end of Murder Mindfully, Bjorn is at his newly minted office, upstairs of the daycare. It's business as usual for the mafia lawyer as he still sends hidden messages to the gang using newspapers with the special thumb mark of their leader to make it official. But this time, he's got two thumbs with him—Dragan's and Boris'.

Bjorn gets away with murdering two of the rival mafia leaders in town, and he's now running both gangs with the help of the two severed thumbs he keeps in an obscure box tucked inside his safe. Moreover, he's successfully evaded police investigation so far. Police Inspector Nicole still has no concrete evidence that can pinpoint Dragan's murderer.
How did Bjorn become a murderer in the first place?
Bjorn's journey from being an infamous mafia lawyer to becoming a murderer was both accidental and intentional. He didn't set out to murder someone, but he intentionally did something or did not do something that he knew would end up killing someone.
It started with him doing mafia lawyer things— cleaning up the mess of his star client, the mafia gang leader named Dragan. Videos of him setting Igor, the second of another mafia leader, on fire, and beating him to death have made it online. In hopes of avoiding jail time, Bjorn suggests that Dragan go into hiding. The mafia leader agrees, and he tasks Bjorn as his getaway driver, but the lawyer doesn't want to do that.

Before their meeting, Bjorn was supposed to go to Dragan's lakehouse with Emily for some quality time. He doesn't want to bring Dragan and Emily near each other, but he doesn't have a choice. In the end, he drives Dragan to a safe place, with Dragan hiding in the trunk of his car. But as soon as they arrive at the lakehouse, Bjorn remembers that his mindfulness class taught him to be present.
The goal is to spend the weekend with his daughter uninterrupted, so he decides to do just that. Choosing mindfulness means Bjorn left Dragan in the trunk because he's a threat to his weekend plans with Emily. Naturally, Dragan suffocated until he died, and it was something Bjorn knew when he decided to leave Dragan in the trunk.

Did Bjorn end up killing Boris in Murder Mindfully?
While Bjorn took Dragan's murder with somewhat psychopathic ease, including disposing of his body, he didn't end up becoming a psychopathic murderer. However, he did end up killing another person in Murder Mindfully.

Bjorn ended up killing Boris, the leader of another mafia gang in town and also Dragan's ex-business partner turned rival. Boris wanted to meet Dragan, and he pressured Bjorn to bring him to Dragan's hiding place. In the end, Bjorn promises Boris that he will bring him to Dragan, and he sets up an elaborate plan on how to do it.
While they were delivering Toni, the trailer, to Boris, Bjorn tasked Sascha with flying a drone at the meeting place. Boris' man destroys the drone, but Bjorn tells him that the live feed from the drone is stored elsewhere, so the police now have evidence against him. He convinces Boris to go into hiding, and suggests bringing him to where Dragan is. Bjorn uses Boris' car for the getaway, and like what he did with Dragan, he has Boris hide in the trunk of the car.
While Murder Mindfully doesn't show how he killed Boris, it implies that he did the same thing to him as he did with Dragan. After all, Bjorn now has Boris' severed thumb.

Does the police think Dragan is dead?
While Police Inspector Nicole has stopped obsessing over Dragan's disappearance and his talk with Bjorn, she continues to investigate the case. She thinks Dragan is dead after police found a severed finger with the mafia leader's ring in a restaurant near his lakehouse. They also found his belt buckle in the lake near his residence. Now, she is trying to find Dragan's body and hunt the killer.
At the end of Murder Mindfully, Nicole is poring over the evidence the police have found. She comes across Emily's talking toy bird and hears a voice confessing about something. When she presses the plush toy, it repeats the message:
"I....and I've never felt more free...ha ha ha."
The toy has been damaged from an explosion, hence the muffled first part of the confession. While she believes it could be another piece of proof about Dragan's death, the distorted message is another worthless piece of evidence for the case.
