Valerie Zavala Wilson, a 19-year-old sophomore at San Jose State University, returned home to Fillmore, California, for the 2002 holiday season. Known for her bright and enthusiastic personality and her aspirations to become an elementary school teacher, Valerie was a former cheerleader who graduated with honors from Fillmore High School. On New Year's Eve 2002, Valerie had fun at a party with friends and family, marking her return home. During the night, she volunteered to drive back.

At around 2 a.m. on January 1, 2003, after dropping off the first person, Valerie drove Samuel Puebla, who was her sister’s high school classmate, to his home. What transpired thereafter was a sequence of brutal and tragic events. Puebla tried to attack Valerie in her car, but when she resisted, he choked her unconscious. As soon as Valerie became conscious, she ran away but was pursued by Puebla.

He eventually caught her in the parking lot of a nearby church, where he attacked and killed her. Valerie’s naked body was found in a drainage culvert the next morning. The discovery of her body and the quick apprehension of Puebla as the suspect shocked the Fillmore community and left her family devastated.

Who was Samuel Puebla and what happened to him?

The investigation into Valerie Zavala’s death began immediately after her body was discovered in a drainage culvert on January 1, 2003, near Santa Paula, California. Investigators focused on Samuel Puebla, who had been sighted with her just before she went missing. Initially, Puebla claimed that Valerie dropped him off and drove away, but his inconsistent statements and forensic evidence pointed to his involvement in the crime.

During the trial, evidence revealed the brutal nature of the attack. After Valerie resisted his assault, Puebla chased her, ultimately subduing her at a church parking lot. Despite Valerie’s attempts to fight back, Puebla struck her repeatedly, removed her clothing, and strangled her, causing asphyxiation. Forensic evidence, including DNA, connected Puebla to the crime scene.

Prosecutors presented a clear narrative of Valerie’s final moments, supported by witness testimonies and physical evidence. Puebla was arrested and was charged with first-degree murder, attempted r*pe, and felony murder. After a month-long trial, he was found guilty and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
