Jenna Fischer opened up about her cancer journey

In her Instagram post about her cancer recovery, Jenna Fischer shared the detailed story of her cancer journey. The actress recalled that back in October of last year she posted a picture of her preparing for her routine mammogram alongside a Michael Scott quote that went, "take care of your ticking time bags".

The mammogram provided inconclusive results due to dense breast tissue and as a result, Fischer was ordered to get a breast ultrasound where something was found in her left breast. The actress later underwent a biopsy and on December 1, she learned that she had Stage 1 Triple Positive Breast Cancer.

Although Fischer was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, the actress detailed that it was highly responsive to treatment. On the first day of 2024, Jenna Fischer underwent a lumpectomy to remove the tumor but also had to undergo chemotherapy and radiation to ensure that it did not return.

The actress began 12 rounds of weekly chemotherapy in February and three weeks of radiation in June. Fischer revealed that although she lost her hair during chemotherapy, she was able to wait to reveal her condition until now thanks to the use of wigs and hats with hair.

Jenna Fischer detailed two reasons why she was making this announcement, firstly, she wanted to ditch her wigs, and secondly, she wanted to encourage people to get their annual mammograms. Fischer wanted people to consider this as a "kick in the butt" to get their mammograms done. She said:

"My tumor was so small it could not be felt on a physical exam. If I had waited six months longer, things could have been much worse. It could have spread."

Jenna Fischer also wanted to offer her support to any woman who was going through a battle with cancer. According to the actress, it took a "village" to fight cancer, and her "amazing village" included her team of doctors and nurses, caregivers, other cancer survivors who coached her through her journey, and her friends and family who offered her an abundance of love and support.

Jenna Fischer revealed that she was able to keep working at the time with the help of her friend, fellow-office co-star, and Office Ladies podcast co-host Angela Kinsey who "protected and advocated" for her. For a long time, only Angela knew about Fischer's diagnosis and helped her in a plethora of ways.

After assuring people that her kids were doing great, Fischer also showed love to her husband Lee Kirk, who was by her side through all the difficulties that came in her cancer journey. When her husband asked her what she wanted to do after being cancer-free, Fischer wanted to celebrate in her backyard with confetti alongside her kids while ringing a bell.

And just like that, the last slide of Jenna Fischer's Instagram post showcased the actress, her husband, and her kids celebrating in the backyard with confetti as Fischer excitedly rang her bell. While she continued to be treated with infusions of Herceptin and a daily dose of Tamoxifen, the actress was happy to say that she was "feeling great".
