What We Do in the Shadows is an American horror comedy mockumentary series, created by Jemaine Clement, premiered on FX on March 27, 2019. It is based on a New Zealand film of the same name which was written by Clement and Taika Waititi.
The series What We Do in the Shadows is based on four traditional vampires Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo Matt Berry) and Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) who coupled with energy vampire Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) live together. They share a house on Staten Island which was earlier maintained by Nandor's familiar Guillermo.
Throughout What We Do in the Shadows, the vampires are seen clashing with the modern world and other supernatural beings. They often clash with each other too and the situations become comical. Guillermo tries to stay loyal to Nandor while pursuing his dream of becoming a vampire. His efforts are complicated by his Van Helsing ancestry as a descendant of a famous vampire hunter.
Nandermo is the slash ship between Nandor and Guillermo De Cruz. Fans have been raving about how Nandermo didn't really win on What We Do in the Shadows. The internet started a discussion on how Nandermo's win was equivalent to a participation trophy.
"Am I the only one that feels like nandermo didn’t really win? like that was the equivalent of getting a participation trophy. I guess I’m glad it’s at least semi-canon but idk, I feel a bit conflicted about it." said one user on Reddit said:
Many fans commented even though the show is not truly based on Nandermo, their partnership will live on.
"I mean the show wasn't really solely about Nandermo but the finale was largely centered around them, and how their "partnership" will live on. It's probably as close to being a great ending without being explicit. said another fan
"It didn’t end with a Nandermo romance, per se. Nandor finally considered Gizmo a warrior and an equal, and not a pet or an object for conquest. And now they’ll be fighting crime in a coequal partnership. I’d say they won." commented another fan
Many fans supported the idea that at least they ended up together at the finale.
"Fair enough! I’m just thankful that they’re at least together in the end, romantically or not." tweeted one fan on Reddit
"The idea of "winning" is such a strange concept to me, because it seems to suggest that unless X happens in a specific way, it doesn't count or it isn't real. I feel like the way they did all of the "hypnosis" endings, while keeping a very open-ended series finale, was so respectful to all the fans attached to this show and characters for a myriad of reasons. "Winning" is what you make it." said another fan
A fan felt let down by "Nandermo" not becoming canon, making the show feel like a waste of time. Another pointed out the ending couldn’t be real since Nadja’s hypnosis created a fake reality.
"5 years of my life wasted on this show lol. Knowing that nandermo was all tease and no canon literally gives 0 rewatch value" told another fan
"No, it wouldn't have been canon with the Newhart ending because Nadja made it clear she was hypnotizing people to see what they wanted to see. There was absolutely no path for what showed after she hypnotized the audience to be the real universe." said another fan
All about What We Do in the Shadows ending
At the end of What We Do in the Shadows season 6, Colin Robinson and Laszlo talk about Laszlo's 'monster' and its recent increase in libido. As Colin humorously describes the creature's 'horniness,' viewers see it chasing Nadja, who laughs off its advances.
Later, Guillermo tells Nandor and the group that he plans to leave the vampires the next day. This deeply saddens Nandor, leading to a heartfelt moment where he asks Guillermo to stop calling him 'master' and simply call him 'Nandor.'
However, after the first batch of credits, Guillermo reveals to the camera crew and Nandor that he isn't actually leaving. He admits he staged the emotional farewell to give the documentary a dramatic and fitting conclusion.
