American Murder: What happened with Scott Peterson?
As shown in American Murder, Scott Peterson was convicted in 2004 for the murder of his wife, Laci Peterson, and unborn son. Though Scott had appealed to be innocent, he was sentenced to death, but the decision was overturned nearly 15 years later in 2020.
Scott is currently serving life imprisonment at at Mule Creek State Prison in Ione, California. According to PEOPLE, jail spokesperson Verell Crittendon said that Scott quickly adjusted in the prison and spread his name “Scottie-Too-Hottie” all over.
Verell also said that in a week he received about 85 letters from his parents, friends, and female members of his former defense team.
“He’s a sociopath! As long as he’s getting all this attention, he’s going to be rather happy,” Crittendon added.
Scott Peterson continues to plead innocence even after his death sentence was overturned in 2020. In 2022, Scott Peterson appealed for a new trial in the court mentioning that the jury at the original trial was biased, but the judge denied the grant for a retrial of his case.
On January 19, 2024, the LA Innocence Project announced that they were going to take over Scott's case and investigate it thoroughly. According to ABC News, the investigation by the LA Innocence Project proves Scott Peterson's claim of not being guilty of the murders.
"New evidence now supports Mr. Peterson's longstanding claim of innocence and raises many questions into who abducted and killed Laci and Conner Peterson," as reported by ABC News.
The evidence of the new investigation includes updated statements by the witnesses and a burglary that took place just a few houses away from the Peterson house. His attorneys have argued that Laci was killed because she had witnessed the men trying to break into the house.
The organization has asked for approval to conduct a new DNA test of blood stains found on the mattress on December 25, 2002, which could link Laci to the incident that occurred in the neighborhood.
LAIP also asked for several other DNA tests that reportedly remained pending back in the 2004 investigation, but the judge denied all the other requests in the hearing of May 29, 2024, but allowed the DNA test of the duct tape that was found on the pants of Laci.
As the case continues, the narratives of both sides have come up in the form of docu-series with Laci’s story being depicted through her mother in American Murder: Laci Peterson and Scott’s version of the story in Peacock docu-series Face to Face with Scott Peterson, set to release on August 20, 2024.
American Murder: Laci Peterson will be available to watch on Netflix on August 14, 2024.
