Ham Tran's Devil's Diner is the first Vietnamese drama series streaming globally on Netflix. The streaming giant released the entire first season of this supernatural horror series of six episodes worldwide on January 26 across more than 190 countries.

Netflix's Devil's Diner sends its audience off on a spine-tingling adventure in the mystical late-night diner where each of its patrons confronts decisions to change life's course. Tackling concepts such as karma, temptation, and redemption, one can only hope to wonder, is there anyone who will be able to escape this perpetual trap of sin and retribution?

As Tuyet becomes the new bartender, the series puts a question to rest: Can anyone ever transcend their faults to escape this wheel of karma, or will humanity forever relapse into its mistakes?

In the final moments of Devil's Diner, Nguyen Van Huy, the bartender, becomes the central figure of the story's resolution. For decades, he has been confined in the diner, and he needs to attract lost souls to make deals that tie them to eternal punishment. But when Mrs. Tuyet comes, she seems to have the power to change everything. Will Tuyet's actions break the cycle and free everyone, or is the diner forever doomed to continue its sinister purpose? Let's unpack the ending and see what it reveals.

Devil's Diner: What does the bartender's fate reveal about the cycle of karma?

At the center of Devil's Diner is Nguyen Van Huy, a man encumbered with his father's karmic debt. It is from this agreement between his father, Hieu, and the previous bartender that Huy becomes the bartender at the diner. Hieu, desperate to save his pregnant wife, accepted the bartender's place but could not fulfill his end of the bargain.

Huy, the son, sacrificed his freedom to save his father and unborn son by completing the deal. In the end, it proves that Huy was wrong about the absolution. Each soul he catches is reclaimed by another hollow ball in the sky, making it possible that karma and punishment are endless.

Further evidence comes from the "Wheel of Samsara" on the wooden door of a diner. While Huy attempts to drive away people to save them from themselves, he finds out that his endeavors are futile because the human entity is dominated by evils such as greed, anger, and pride.

Devil's Diner: Could Mrs. Tuyet have been the break in the cycle?

The arrival of Mrs. Tuyet at the diner brings hope to Huy. He thinks she could be the sinless soul who could unlock the mysterious door and break the cycle. Tuyet's emotions of loss and anger towards her son's death, however, cloud her judgment. She does not forgive Huy; instead, she curses his death and locks herself in the cellar as the new bartender.

This twist underscores the central theme of the show: the impossibility of overcoming one's basest instincts. The transformation of Tuyet into the bartender mirrors that of Huy, demonstrating how karmic debt binds a person to perpetual suffering. Her inability to forgive shows the strength of emotions like hatred and anger in perpetuating the cycle.

Devil's Diner: What does the ending symbolize about humanity's struggles?

Devil's Diner masterfully intertwines Buddhist and Hindu philosophies, particularly the concept of karma. The diner serves as a microcosm of humanity's struggles, where characters repeatedly fall victim to their desires. The "Wheel of Samsara" and Yama, the god of death, symbolize the inescapable consequences of one's actions.

The last scene of the movie, forgiveness and goodness can rescue people from the cycle, and these are not very common qualities. The force with which Huy tries to save others demonstrates his strength in the face of circumstances, but his getting trapped inside proves that he is not strong enough to help others. So does Tuyet's inability to forgive and forget prove fatal for her to show that salvation only takes place when a person is strong-minded and avoids sin.

Netflix’s Devil's Diner ends on a poignant note, leaving viewers with profound questions about the nature of sin and redemption. Huy’s tragic journey, Tuyet’s downfall, and the perpetuation of the karmic cycle serve as haunting reminders of humanity’s struggles with temptation and forgiveness. As Tuyet becomes the new bartender, the series puts a question to rest: Can anyone ever transcend their faults in order to escape this wheel of karma, or will humanity forever relapse into its mistakes?
