Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood With My Father was released on Netflix on September 10, 2024. The 4-part docuseries is based on the theme of fatherhood, as comedian and actor Jack Whitehall connects with his father on the subject, while he himself is on the verge of becoming a father soon.

The synopsis of the show reads:

“Jack Whitehall and his father embark on a globe-trotting trip to find answers to the big questions facing the comedian after becoming a dad.”

The series’ exploration of fatherhood, however, is not the only reason it is being talked about. According to outlets like Wales Online and Cornwall Live, the docu-series has allegedly “misrepresented” a picturesque UK town. Read on to find out more about the allegation.

Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood With My Father under fire for alleged blunder

In the series’ second episode, titled Technology, Jack and his father visit an advanced robotics studio named Engineered Arts in the town of Falmouth. In the studio, the two fathers meet Ameca, deemed the globe’s most advanced humanoid robot.

The docuseries has faced criticism for its portrayal of Falmouth, a town on the south coast of Cornwall, England. Residents have complained that generic images of another port town were used to depict Falmouth. A report by Wales Online on September 13, 2024, claimed that a "stock photo" was used in an aerial view of the town.

Cornwall Live carried the same complaint published in a report on the same day. A resident of Falmouth told the outlet the following:

“There is a cut scene showing an aerial view of what appears to be some random port town either in America, or possibly the Bahamas.”

The statement continued:

“Someone from the production team has obviously not done their due diligence and submitted a stock photo of some random port town! Which is not Falmouth. And not even anywhere in Cornwall or the UK for that matter!”

The local further went on to comment that as a resident of the town, they felt “slightly misrepresented” by the shot in Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood With My Father episode 2. Moreover, the local felt that for “a large budget production on Netflix”, such an error should have not been present.

Is it really Falmouth in Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood With My Father episode 2?

Towards the beginning of episode 2, Jack Whitehall announces in a voiceover:

“I wanted to see what AI was truly capable of, so I’ve come to Falmouth in Cornwall.”

However, as per Cornwall Live, the footage of the disputed aerial shot “closely resembles a bay called Falmouth Harbour in Antigua and Barbados.”

This alleged blunder would be particularly unfortunate owing to the fact that the Cornish town of Falmouth has recently been in the news for being a top tourist attraction. In December 2023, TimeOut voted the town number nine in its list of 15 best places to visit in the UK last December.

The town was particularly praised for its vibrant student life and its cool and quiet feel. Cornwall Live has reportedly approached Netflix for comment, which has not been received yet.
