Netflix's Monsters: Brief timeline of Jose and Kitty Menendez murder case
August 20, 1989: The murders
Netflix's Monsters will show how Jose and Kitty Menendez were shot multiple times at close range with a shotgun in the family room of their Beverly Hills mansion. The elder son of the couple Lyle Menendez called 911, reportedly screaming, "Someone killed my parents."
August 1989: Initial investigation
During the initial investigation, it was suspected that the murders were potentially connected to business dealings of Jose, and that someone killed them due to a professional rivalry. However, the case soon took a turn as the children of the couple became the primary suspects in the double murder.
The police suspected the two boys on the basis of their weird behavior and strange activities.
March 1990: The arrests
Based on a tip from Judalon Smyth, who was dating a psychologist that the brothers visited, the police found out that Lyle and Erik had admitted to committing the murders. On March 8, 1990, Lyle was taken into custody outside his mansion, and Erik turned himself in two days later at Los Angeles International Airport.
July 20, 1993: First trial begins
The well-known trial of Lyle and Erik Menendez started in 1993 and was aired by Court TV. Even though they were tried together, the brothers had different juries. Both brothers testified about being s*xually abused by their father and justified their crime as an act of self-defense.
January 1994: Mistrial declared
After a long discussion, both juries were stuck and couldn't decide if the brothers should be found guilty of murder or manslaughter, which led to the trial being declared inconclusive.
October 1995: Second trial begins
Netflix's Monsters will also show that the second trial started with a single jury, and the prosecution alleged that the brothers had attempted murder to get their hands on the fortune of their parents and also claimed that the allegations made by the defense about the s*xual, physical, and mental abuse were false.
March 1996: Guilty verdict
Netflix's Monsters will further look into the verdict that stated Lyle and Erik Menendez were found guilty of first-degree murder. After that, they were sentenced to lifetime prison with no possibility of parole.
May 2023: New evidence emerges
The recent development in the case has come up as new evidence was found in 2023 that supports the claims of abuse by the Menendez brothers. The evidence included a letter from Erik Menendez to his cousin Andy Cano that mentions the abuse done by their father Jose.
Another evidence was another victim of Jose’s abuse and torture. Roy Rossello came forward and stated that he had also been abused by Jose Menendez.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office is looking into these new allegations, following which the court will decide if the brothers' convictions will be overturned and if a new trial will be held.
