My Melody and Kuromi series is an upcoming stop-motion animation series that debuts in July 2025 on Netflix. The series is created to celebrate My Melody’s 50th and Kuromi’s 20th anniversaries, and it will bring the beloved Sanrio characters to life in their Mariland home.

The series is directed by Tomoki Misato, known for Pui Pui Molcar, and written by award-winning screenwriter Shuko Nemoto. Netflix promises that the series has heartfelt narratives in store for the fan-favorite characters. It is the first production of the stop-motion animation studio Toruku, a part of WIT Studio. The project aims to appeal to audiences of all ages.

As stated above, the much-anticipated My Melody and Kuromi series will premiere in July 2025. Netflix has not yet released an official release date. This celebration of two iconic Sanrio characters is expected to feature a blend of modern stop-motion techniques with appealing storytelling.

Tomoki Misato, the director of the series, talked about his excitement for the project. In a statement released by Netflix on January 9, 2025, he said,

“I’m thrilled that this project is finally announced in this important year marking the 50th anniversary of My Melody and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi.”

He continued,

“This momentous project motivated all of us to come together, take on various challenges, and push the envelope with stop-motion. I hope everyone will enjoy this exciting story set in our handcrafted Mariland, the thrilling action that pushes the limits of stop-motion, and, of course, the cute and dynamic characters.”

My Melody is a character developed by Japanese entertainment company Sanrio in 1975. She is portrayed as a cheerful and straightforward girl who loves spending time with her brother and is fond of baking cookies with her mother. She was initially marketed towards young girls but has captured the hearts of fans worldwide over time.

According to her official character website, her birthday is January 18, she lives in the forest of Mariland, and her friends are My Sweet Piano and Flat. She is a popular cartoon character and has been featured in multiple series. In 2008, Mattel released a Barbie inspired by My Melody.

Kuromi is the self-proclaimed rival of My Melody, who debuted in 2005 as an antagonist of Onegai My Melody. Initially, she intended to appear as a counterpart of My Melody, but over time, her character has evolved to become more friendly, charming, and feminine. Kuromi has also developed a fanbase of her own and ranked in the Top 3 of the 2024 Sanrio character ranking.

What is My Melody and Kuromi series about?

The My Melody and Kuromi series will be set in Mariland, the home of My Melody. The duo will go on adventures together, and long-time fans can expect to get nostalgic with this modern adaptation. Director Tomoki Misato has stated that he has tried to push the boundaries of stop-motion animation, and viewers will get to see love, humor, and memorable scenes.

Screenwriter Nemoto penned the scripts for the show during the COVID-19 pandemic. She told Netflix,

“Having My Melody and Kuromi speak lines I wrote felt like a reward for me as a writer, because of the pandemic, I couldn’t meet with director Misato or the producers in person, but we connected remotely each week, carefully building this together.”

She added,

“The project is filled with love for the world of My Melody, beloved by people of all ages. I believe everyone, from adults to children, will have favorite scenes and lines.”
