Netflix’s Ransom Canyon: Everything we know so far

Netflix's much-anticipated contemporary Western series Ransom Canyon is expected to premiere in 2025. The multigenerational family drama is based on Jodi Thomas's book series of the same name. The show will capture the intersecting lives of three ranching families in Texas' countryside, blending themes of love, loss, grief, and legacy.

The central plot of the series will revolve around two contrasting ranch owners, Staten Kirkland and Davis Collins, who compete for the affection of Quinn O’Grady. Quinn is a woman striving to make a new life after returning home from pursuing a career as a concert pianist.

Ransom Canyon will tackle the tensions between tradition and modernization through its characters. The characters also explore romantic relationships and rivalries, while navigating complicated emotions.

The writer, creator, and executive producer of the show is April Blair, known for Wednesday and All American. Ransom Canyon will contain 10 sixty-minute episodes. The director of the first two episodes is Umbrella Academy fame Amanda Marsalis.

Ransom Canyon will be released on Netflix

As stated above, Ransom Canyon is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2025. The streaming platform has not disclosed an official release date yet. On December 5, 2023, Netflix had teased that the show was "coming soon".

The production for Ransom Canyon officially started in January 2024 and wrapped in June 2024. The filming was set to start in late 2023 but was delayed due to the writers' and actors' strikes.

On June 18, 2024, the leading star Minka Kelly shared a post on Instagram reminiscing the show's production, captioned:

"Less than a week left of shooting to go. Wild we’ve been here doing this for 6 mos. I can easily say this is the best job I’ve ever had. I’ve made friends for life. Everyone here is the best of the best and I will miss them all when we wrap. We all gave it our very best to make something so beautiful and special for you. I can’t wait to be able to show you more."

Netflix's Jinny Howe talked to Deadline about the show's inspiration in an August 23, 2022 interview. She said:

“It’s a multi-generational family show set on a ranch, and we say it’s Virgin River meets Yellowstone. We think that it’s going to deliver on all the romance and again it will be a really beautiful vista and setting, very escapist. It is in development in early stages, but we’re very excited about it; it feels very promising.”
