Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries reboot debuted its fourth season in July 2024. Volume 4, episode 4, titled "Murder, Central Stage", covered the death of Sigrid Stevenson, which occurred in 1977.
Sigrid was found naked, handcuffed, and in a pool of blood inside the locked theater, specifically Kendall Hall, of Trenton State College.
The case went cold in part due to a lack of DNA testing that could have better pinpointed the suspect, especially since there was evidence of Sigrid being sexually assaulted. One person was questioned as a suspect and was eventually let go due to him clearing a polygraph exam.
The cold case of Sigrid Stevenson's murder has led to students spreading ghost stories of the theater being haunted, especially since Sigrid loved playing the piano there.
Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries covers over 30-year-old cold case
Sigrid Stevenson's murder has gone unsolved for over 30 years. However, according to Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries, an approximate timeline of the murder has been constructed.
According to Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries, investigators believe that Sigrid Stevenson was sleeping inside Kendall Hall because when she returned to college after her trip to Nova Scotia, she couldn't access her room. This was due to her roommates being on vacation at the time.
Deciding to sleep inside the theater until they returned, Sigrid Stevenson was seen on September 2 and September 3. On the latter day, she stayed in the green room but eventually moved out due to a play performance that happened that day.
She was, however, reported to have been in the audience that watched the play. Others in the audience of the play reported she was in good spirits at the time.
The police established that the timeframe of her death was after the play, when all the audience members had left, and before her body was discovered by a security guard on the next evening, September 4.
She was discovered handcuffed and gagged with her own blouse, with a security guard discovering her body after getting suspicious about a bike he saw chained up outside Kendall Hall.
The investigators initially suspected someone from law enforcement, as Sigrid had a history of squatting in campus buildings, causing the police to chase her away. Her body being handcuffed gave further credence to this hypothesis, but ultimately, nobody was narrowed down as a suspect.
Only one person was taken in for questioning, a man named Chuck, who seemed to know Sigrid Stevenson based on a playbill found in her possession.
Chuck had supposedly bought her a beer at one point, and he'd played the role of a cop on the September 3 play, which would give him access to prop handcuffs.
Eventually, he was let go after clearing a polygraph test, and no other suspects were identified in the case.
Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries hints at new potential suspects
When reexamining Sigrid Stevenson's murder, Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries points to two people who were never investigated at the time but could be considered credible suspects.
The first person was a maintenance worker who had possession of the keys to Kendall Hall at the time. Sigrid Stevenson even had his phone number among her possessions.
However, he was eventually fired by Trent State College for unrelated reasons, and therefore never brought in for questioning.
The second was a man in charge of lighting at the theater who also had a set of keys to Kendall Hall. This man would have the opportunity to fiddle with the lighting on the evening when the murder happened.
