Just prior to the release of Mr. McMahon on Netflix, WWE founder Vince McMahon released a statement on his social media accounts slamming the documentary. In a long statement, McMahon spoke about how the documentary misinterprets him and makes the final conclusion that he is ultimately the same as the "Mr. McMahon" persona that he portrayed on screen.
Alongside that, Vince McMahon also accused the documentary of using editing tricks to leave the viewers confused and deceive them by supporting a deceptive narrative. McMahon also mentioned the lawsuit in the statement where he was accused by Janel Grant of s*xually abusing her.
Vince McMahon said via X,
“A lot has been misrepresented or left out entirely in an effort to leave viewers intentionally confused. The producers use typical editing tricks with out of context footage and dated soundbites etc. to distort the viewers’ perception and support a deceptive narrative. In an attempt to further their misleading account, the producers use a lawsuit based on an affair I ended as evidence that I am, in fact, ‘Mr. McMahon.’ I hope the viewer will keep an open mind and remember that there are two sides to every story.”
Following Vince McMahon's statement, Janel Grant's lawyer, Ann Callis, put out a statement of her own through her PR representative, Kendra Barkoff Lamy, slamming the WWE founder's statement. Calling McMahon "delusional," Callis hopes that the documentary can shed a light on the criminal acts that were perpetrated by him.
"Vince McMahon physically and emotionally abused, s*xually assaulted and human trafficked Janel Grant for more than two years. Calling his horrific and criminal behavior 'an affair' is delusional and nothing more than a sad attempt to save his shredded reputation."
The Mr. McMahon documentary drops on Netflix on September 25, 2024.
Why was Vince McMahon sued by Janel Grant?
In January 2024, Janel Grant, who was a former WWE employee, sued McMahon for s*xually assaulting her and trafficking her as well between 2020 and 2021. Alongside McMahon, Grant also accused WWE executive John Laurinaitis of doing the same as well and an unnamed WWE star who was an UFC fighter as well, with many assuming it to be Brock Lesnar.
Grant also alleged that Vince McMahon put her through many degrading acts and offered her around $3 million in hush money, but then stopped paying her after just giving her $1 million. Following the revelation of the lawsuit, McMahon stepped down from his roles at WWE and TKO and, in a statement, then denied the allegations that were made against him.
McMahon also stated that he stepped down out of respect for the WWE universe. Grant's claims also led to an investigation into McMahon. This wouldn't be the first time the WWE founder would be involved in a controversy, as he has been accused of s-ual misconduct multiple times in the past as well.
