HBO's Green Lantern show, Lanterns, has finally found its John Stewart in actor Aaron Pierre. Recently seen in Netflix's Rebel Ridge, Pierre will be joining Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan in the new DC series from creator Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy, and Tom King.
The news of Aaron Pierre being cast as John Stewart in Lanterns was first confirmed by DC Studios co-president James Gunn on his social media.
Stephen James was also in the running to portray the character, but it looks like Aaron Pierre suited the role better.
It is currently unknown when Lanterns will premiere on HBO and Max.

John Stewart was created by Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams and was first introduced in Green Lantern Vol 2 #87 in January, 1972. He is a member of the Green Lantern Corps and the third Green Lanter to hail from the Earth following Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner.
Stewart was initially an architect and was later selected by the Guardians of the Universe to become a Green Lantern. He was chosen to be Hal Jordan's backup after Guy Gardner was badly injured. This led to Jordan objecting to the choice of the Guardians as he believed that Stewart didn't respect authority. However, the Guardians held firm on their decision, and Stewart was chosen.
Hal Jordan and John Stewart then decided to work together and eventually warmed up to each other. After Jordan gave up his role as Green Lantern, Stewart decided to become the superhero full-time.
In media, John Stewart has previously been adapted in the Justice League cartoon. Aaron Pierre will be the first actor to portray the character in live action.
What is HBO and DC Studios' Lanterns about?
Lanterns was first originally revealed by James Gunn on January 31, 2023, when he unveiled the first slate of upcoming DC films Gods and Monsters. Gunn revealed that the show will be heavily inspired by True Detective, where a much older Hal Jordan will be taking in a younger John Stewart under his belt to investigate a mystery on Earth that will tie into the larger DC Universe.
"This is a story of a couple of Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan," said Gunn while unveiling the project. "We have a few other Lanterns peppered in there but this is really a terrestrial based TV show which is almost like True Detective with a couple of Green Lanterns who are space cops watching over Precinct Earth in it they discover a terrifying mystery that ties into our largest story of the DCU."
Another DCU portrayal of Green Lantern can also be seen in the upcoming Superman film, where Nathan Fillion plays the role of Guy Gardner.
