At the heart of Acapulco with all its comedy, drama, and wholesomeness, is the romance between its two main characters— Maximo and Julia. The show plays out in two different timelines, with Enrique Arrizon and Camila Perez playing the younger version of the lovers.

Veteran actor Eugenio Derbez plays an older version of Maximo, now a billionaire, laden with riches but bereft of companionship in his advanced years. A trip to the Las Colinas Hotel, the nucleus of much of Acapulco's happenings, allows him a chance to rekindle his romance with an older Julia.

So, when I had a chance to speak to Acapulco creator Austin Winsberg and showrunner Sam Laybourne, both of whom serve as executive producers, I had to ask them about Maximo getting a second shot at the woman he loves.

Much of the Maximo and Julia romance in Acapulco is still untold, confirm the show's EPs

At the end of Acapulco Season 3, we see Maximo make another effort to win Julia's hand. But what happened between the couple to bring them to this point? Austin Winsberg confirmed there's a lot of story left to tell:

"We still don’t know exactly what happened between them. That got them from a young couple in love to a place where there’s real history and challenges there in the present day. So that’s all interesting things for the potential future of the show is how did they go from this to that."

As an older Maximo reflects on his past, narrating his tale to all who would listen like an ancient mariner, one is led to believe that the show is about second chances. How differently would one do things if they had another shot at happiness? Showrunner Sam Laybourne confirmed:

"Yeah, there’s an idea of it’s never too late that we establish as a theme in Season 3. And now, this is the cliffhanger is — is it too late? Somebody who you loved so deeply…can you find your way back to them? And we’re going to hopefully, knock on wood, have a chance to explore what happened? What is the breach between them that needs to be filled?"

Maximo, who is wealthy beyond description, purchases the Las Colinas hotel at the end of Acapulco Season 3. Laybourne explained his unselfish motivation during the interview:

"But what I love about it is that in all of our lives we have this need to rectify our mistakes. And now, he has an unbelievable opportunity to do something about it. So, him acquiring the hotel at the end of the season…it’s not a move. It’s not a calculated thing he’s doing. It’s born out of a feeling of maybe I can make some changes. And right some of the wrongs of the past."

Are there no real villains (except maybe one?) in this universe? This is something that Austin Winsberg finds is reflective of the cast as well:

"Our intent with the show is to be feel-good and to uplift. And at the core of all of these characters who are meaning well, trying to do well, care about each other. I think the cast is also that way with each other."

All of Acapulco Season 3 is now streaming on Apple TV+. If you want a show that leaves you feeling warm and fuzzy and satisfied, look no further!
