Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live on November 2, 2024. The VP joined actress Maya Rudolph, who was portraying a mirror image of Harris during her sketch. In the sketch, Maya said that she wished she could talk to someone "who's been in [my] shoes."
"A Black South Asian woman running for president, preferably from the Bay Area..." the actress said.
She then turned to look into the mirror as the camera panned to show Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris. As the crowd cheered upon seeing Harris, the two women continued their conversation that had multiple puns based on Kamala's name, like, "keep calm-ala," and "watch a rom-com-ala."
The sketch went viral and netizens took to social media to express their delight at it as many praised both women for their wit and humor. One person took to Instagram to comment on The Shade Room's post about the clip and said that it was "10/10" and that Harris' team had "aced this segment."
"Kamala and her team aced this segment lamo, i don't care who u voting for but this was 10/10."
Netizens continued to praise the sketch, many stating Harris was hilarious, with one person even likening her former president Barack Obama. Some said that it was "amazing" that she could campaign the way she was despite being given only 100 days.
Republicans criticize Kamala Harris' appearance on SNL
Maya Rudolph's two-minute-long sketch featured several puns on Kamala Harris' name, including "keep calm-ala," "cool new stepmom-ala," and "end the drama-la." The sketch saw both women dressed in identical black suits that they had accessorized with a pearl necklace.
It began with Rudolph as Harris preparing to deliver a speech in Philadelphia. Following a conversation with Tim Walz (Jim Gaffigan), Joe Biden (Dana Carvey), and husband Doug Emhoff (Andy Samberg), she is left alone in the dressing room. She turns to her vanity mirror and says that she wishes she could talk to someone who could relate to her as a "Black South Asian woman running for president."
As she turns to the mirror, the camera pans to Kamala Harris sitting opposite her. Harris' surprise appearance is met with cheers. The Vice President looks at Rudolph and says that she was just there to remind her, "You got this."
"It is nice to see you, Kamala, and I’m just here to remind you: you got this. Because you can do something your opponent cannot do. You can open doors," Kamala tells the comedian.
Harris is referring to her rival, Donald Trump's recent campaign event where he drove a garbage truck in Wisconsin. The former president did so as a response to Joe Biden allegedly calling his supporters "garbage." Videos from the event showed the Republican candidate reaching toward the door to open it but appeared to miss.
At one point during the skit, Harris asks Rudolph, who is laughing:
"Do I really laugh like that?"
Maya Rudolph is known to portray Harris on SNL. The comedian kicked off the show's 50th season with a cold open featuring Rudolph's Harris and Jim Gaffigan's Tim Walz at a rally.
Several Republicans criticized Harris' segment on SNL, including Trump's son, Eric, who told Fox News that mainstream media had been against his father "from day one."
"I mean, just no one, no one trusts most of those mainstream channels. I'm not sure if the Saturday Night Live stuff is going to ultimately matter. I think it's my father's work ethic (is) going to matter," he added.
Steven Cheung, Trump's spokesperson, stated that Harris appeared on the SNL (which he referred to as Saturday Night Leftists) as she had nothing "substantive to offer the American people."
Additionally, Brendan Carr, a Republican on the Federal Communications Commission, slammed the move in an X post. He called it "a clear and blatant effort to evade the FCC's Equal Time rule."
Kamala Harris is not the only politician to appear on SNL, as former President Barack Obama, Sarah Palin, and Donald Trump have also appeared on the show.
Kamala Harris has not publicly reacted to the criticism.
