Time Bandits season 2 is reportedly off the cards as Variety has confirmed the renewal of the series has been canceled by Apple TV+ after one season. Surprisingly the fate of the reboot was revealed within a month after it ended its run for season 1.
Based on the movie of the same name by Terry Gilliam, Time Bandits was one of the most-anticipated releases by Apple TV+ for 2024. Given the series boasted a cast lineup including Taika Waititi and Lisa Kudrow, two of the household names in the industry, the show had all the ingredients for success but ultimately didn’t secure a second season.
As of now, Apple TV+ hasn’t officially revealed the reason behind the cancellation. However, this might be connected to recent news of Apple TV+ scaling down on spending. Follow along with the article to learn more.

Time Bandits reboot ends its run with one season
Acclaimed for spending too much for its quality-oriented originals, Apple TV+ will be facing budget cutbacks with Apple shifting its content focus. As reported by Bloomberg in July 2024, Apple is spending billions of dollars on its originals and is being praised for its efforts, given the strong reception and the accolades that follow.
However, the streamer is generating way less than its giant rival, Netflix. It has not been made official that Time Bandits season 2 is canceled due to budget restraints, but based on the reports and the numbers, it is likely a factor.
Nevertheless, the Time Bandits TV adaptation has been critically acclaimed, garnering an 80% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Although not something that could overtake the current leading titles, the reboot was still a solid entry that resonated deeply with fans of the original film and introduced the art of Terrence Gilliam.
Speaking to Variety about how the reboots will attract a new generation of audiences, Iain Morris, one of the showrunners, said:
“I think ‘Time Bandits’ is actually almost the lost classic,” he said. “You mention it to a lot of people and they’ve never heard of it, but you meet other people and it’s their favorite film.”
He continued with:
“But they are quite rare. So if you’re bringing these brilliant ideas that people have and these brilliant worlds, and expanding and changing and introducing them to a new audience, I think it’s great. Some of the best songs ever made are cover versions.”
Time Bandits follows a group of thieves who somehow manage to steal a powerful map capable of helping its users travel through space and time. Angered by the consequences of the map’s wrongful use, the Supreme Being sets off on a hunting quest to retrieve the artifact.
The thieves encounter Kevin on their journey, who eventually becomes a part of the ragtag motley crew and together they embark on adventures that are simply amazing.
Time Bandits premiered on July 24, 2024, with a double-header debut, and subsequently released episodes in batches of two every week. Season 1 concluded on August 21, 2024.
