By December 2023, Judith Light joined the cast, and Adam Bernstein joined as the pilot’s director. Plot summary of Before Season 1
The series follows the life of Eli, a child psychiatrist (played by Crystal). Eli is struggling after the sudden death of his wife, Lynn (played by Light). Noah is a troubled young boy who finds his way to Eli.
Eli starts treating Noah, but their connection is mysterious and unsettling, somehow related to Eli's past. After Eli takes Noah under his wing, Noah begins drawing a farmhouse that holds mysterious significance, linking to a dark part of Eli’s life.
Eli and Noah's interactions will unearth long-buried truths and stir up painful memories, forcing Eli to confront his past.
In an exclusive interview with Comic Book Resources, Thorp sheds more light on the show's premise and Eli's character. She says,
"What was interesting with this character was the idea of when you define yourself in a certain way, like "I'm a scientist and a doctor. As a scientist and doctor, I know what the facts are. I have the answers. I've spent an entire career proving that to myself and everyone else." "
She further adds,
"When that rug is pulled out from under him, he's scrambling to get a hold of it because, if he's not a scientist, he doesn't know who he is. If he doesn't have the answers, he doesn't know who he is. He's flailing as he's trying to anchor himself again. That was the fun of that character's journey."
The miniseries contains elements of thriller and suspense, which are visible through Eli's guilt, memories, and perception of reality. As Noah increasingly hints that he knows what Eli is hiding, the psychiatrist is pulled into a downward spiral through each episode. The series maintains tension between the supernatural and psychological elements.
