Thailand has been considered one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly nations in Southeast Asia. Lawmakers there took a significant step in 2022 when four bills regarding same-sex marriage were introduced for initial reading.
The Guardian reported a statement by Plaifah Kyoka Shodladd, who is an 18-year-old activist, which says:
"Although Thailand has been known as the gay paradise or the queer paradise, it was never really the actual paradise for queer people. But once we have this bill it will open so many doors."
On June 18, the final reading happened and the country's senate approved it. The bill received the support of 130 out of 152 members who were present then. Thailand is now the third country in Asia, after Taiwan and Nepal, to allow same-sex union.
