Cypress Hill is set to perform with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall, making a Simpsons joke come true. This real-life collaboration is happening 28 years after their fictional union on the show. The band will perform their Black Sunday album in London on Wednesday, July 10.
A Simpsons episode parodied the joke, with Cypress Hill speculating that they had unintentionally reserved the London Symphony Orchestra "possibly while high."
However, The Simpsons actually didn’t predict Cypress Hill's gig with London Symphony as it was a deliberate attempt by both the groups to make the joke come true.
Cypress Hill pulls off a 1996 Simpsons joke with the London Symphony Orchestra
US hip-hop group Cypress Hill appeared in a 1996 episode of The Simpsons, titled, Homerpalooza, where they performed "Insane in the Brain" with the London Symphony Orchestra. After years of fan pressure, they will do a one-night show in London, playing hits like I Wanna Get High and Insane in the Brain from their album Black Sunday, along with other songs from their back catalog.
Rappers B-Real, Sen Dog, and DJ Lord told recently Sky News ahead of the show that it will "probably be one of the biggest moments" in the group's history. B-Real further said-
"We've done some pretty damn big gigs, but this is with some of the best musicians in the world. So, yeah, we're excited."
He added-
"We've played a lot of historical venues throughout our 32 years of making music... this is one of the places that as a hip-hop artist, you don't expect... So that's another thing we're honoured by, is that we're not only playing with the LSO, but we're playing in their house - the most prestigious place to play."
Furthermore, B-Real also remarked to the BBC during the one-night-only performance's rehearsals, and said-
"It's been something that we've talked about for many years since The Simpsons episode first aired."
He further added-
"So it's very special for us. And it's coming off the heels of our 30th anniversary for our Black Sunday album.”
The group also acknowledged that in their decades-long career, this upcoming event is one of those things on their checklist.
In The Simpsons episode, English-American singer, musician, and composer Peter Frampton attempted to secure the orchestra. Meanwhile, Cypress Hill has been trying to talk Frampton into attending the highly anticipated live performance in real life.
Referring to the same, B-Real further told the BBC-
"Yes, actually, we've been trying to invite him. We've never met him before, but we thought it would be a kick to invite the legendary Peter Frampton."
Other band members then added that they-
"Salute The Simpsons because if they had not written that episode, we probably wouldn't be doing this."
More about the two groups
Being one of the hip-hop's biggest acts, Cypress Hill has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide. They hold certificates in both platinum and multi-platinum. For their first five albums, the group also received positive reviews from critics. They are further as one of the primary forebears of 1990s and West Coast hip hop.
On the other hand, the London Symphony Orchestra or the LSO has recorded since the beginning of recording, starting with the acoustic renditions of Weber's Oberon Overture, Beethoven's Egmont Overture, and Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody in F minor under Nikisch.
