The Penguin is just a few weeks away from release as it is set to premiere its first episode on HBO on September 19, 2024. The series, a spinoff of Matt Reeves' The Batman, will focus on Colin Farrell's DC villain as he tries to get to the top of Gotham's crime underworld following the death of Carmine Falcone. However, he is not alone, as others are gunning for the position too.
With The Penguin being a continuation of The Batman, many fans might wonder whether they would have to watch the latter movie first before fully enjoying the show. However, producer Dylan Clark recently told SFX magazine that he has ensured that won't be the case. Fans can jump into the upcoming series and enjoy it for what it is without ever having watched The Batman.
“Matt’s words – and I love this phraseology – is that the movie vibrates against the show and the show vibrates against the movie. They inform each other. You don’t need to watch the movie in order to enjoy the show. I just think it enriches it. They are connected," Clark said.
However, to fully enjoy The Penguin, it would be recommended to check out The Batman, as it would still help with some of the show's machinations.
What is The Penguin about?
The Penguin will be set right after the events of The Batman and will primarily focus on Oswald Cobblepot. With Carmine Falcone being murdered by The Riddler, there is a power struggle in Gotham as the mob tries to earn the top spot. Once a nobody, Oswald Cobblepot will try to rise to that power to make a name for himself and become the most feared criminal in Gotham.
The official synopsis for the show, as per Max, reads:
"This thrilling crime drama follows Oswald “Oz” Cobb’s quest for control in Gotham City. With the city in peril following the seawall’s collapse, Oz seeks to fill the power vacuum left by the death of Carmine Falcone and finally give his mother Francis the life he’s always promised."
It continues:
"But first, Oz must confront his enemies, including Carmine’s children, Sofia Falcone and Alberto Falcone ; the Maroni family, led by their imprisoned patriarch, Salvatore Maroni; and Oz’s own demoralizing reputation as The Penguin."
The show was developed by Lauren Lefranc, with Matt Reeves joining her as a producer. It is scheduled to premiere on HBO and Max on September 19, 2024.
The Penguin to serve as a bridge between The Batman and The Batman 2
Alongside being its own thing, the upcoming Colin Farrell-starrer will also serve as a bridge between The Batman and The Batman - Part II. Speaking to SFX magazine for its October 2024 issue, Matt Reeves revealed:
“There are details that actually connect right into the way the next movie begins, and the way that Oz enters that world as we hand the baton back to Batman, and Batman is on another case.”
Colin Farrell is also slated to reprise his role in the upcoming sequel, which is set to be released on October 2, 2026.
