Joe Locke's casting as Billy Maximoff/Kaplan in Agatha All Along had already sparked controversy, and now fans are turning their attention toward the show's creator, Jac Schaeffer, following her recent comments about the character's past in comics. In a recent interview with Variety, published on October 18, 2024, she admitted that she didn't "fully understand" Billy's backstory.

When asked about altering Billy's origins in Agatha All Along, Schaeffer stated that she didn't have "patience" for all the characters that were involved in the story. During the conversation, she shared:

"Truth be told, I still don’t fully understand it. I’m in for an instinctive plotline, Lord knows, but there were so many steps and so many characters, and I just had no patience for it."

However, fans of the character didn't appreciate the statement made by Schaeffer, as they believed that Agatha All Along was disrespecting the character's past by doing this. With many fans already angry about Billy Kaplan not being portrayed by a Jewish character, there was massive backlash online when it came to Schaeffer's comments. One netizen on X tweeted:

Several others expressed their take on the whole situation.

"Can you imagine being the original writers for all these comics and watching these showrunners just trash your work while making money off of it at the same time?" said one fan.
"I dont think anything she says about the comics or the character in general should be taken seriously honestly," said another fan.

Meanwhile, fans also took issue with how the Marvel Cinematic Universe constantly disrespects the origins of the characters and how the creators of these characters are also a part of these projects.

"That's why i defend that comic book writers, especially the creators of the characters and adapted sagas, should be part of these CBM projects," said one fan.
"They butchered young avengers so bad i know i'm gonna hate when they build the mcu team," an X user commented.
"See y’all want jewish people to shut up & be quiet bc of the bar mitzvah episode meanwhile the show creator (and writers in attachment) don’t know a f*****g thing about billy and admitted to being lazy so they disregarded his actual character source material," another person commented.

Billy's origins in Agatha All Along and the comics explored

In the comics, Billy Kaplan was born after Wanda Maximoff claimed two lost souls to give birth to twin boys. However, those souls were claimed by Mephisto, but due to them being transfigured by Wanda, it led to the demon being destroyed and the souls being reborn into new beings, with Billy's soul ending up in the Kaplan family.

However, Agatha All Along disregards this origin and retools it to fit within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In Agatha All Along, when Wanda destroys the Hex, Billy's soul then finds the recently deceased Billy Kaplan, which it possesses and then takes control of. This retroactively removes the Mephisto element and becomes a huge deviation from how the character is portrayed in the comics.
