House of the Dragon season 2 episode 5 premiered on Sunday, July 14, 2024, bringing forth a new episode after the drama-filled odyssey fans witnessed last week. This episode, though rather slow, sowed the seeds, quite literally, for one of the biggest events in Fire and Blood.

Those who have read the George R.R. Martin novel may have already realized that this episode's ending pointed toward the infamous sequence in Fire and Blood, which is dubbed the "Red Sowing."

Those who have watched the original HBO series already know that "red" in George R.R. Martin's world is hardly festive. This sequence saw many such deaths that ultimately led to a defining conclusion.

The sowing in question refers to the act of selecting Dragonseeds to claim the owner-less dragons. Rhaenyra's (Emma D'Arcy) side had a few unclaimed dragons. These included Vermithor and Silverwing, who are strong enough to fight the mighty Vhaegar.

House of the Dragon season 2 episode 5's ending saw Jacerys (Harry Collett) discuss these big dragons with his mother. He proposed that they should identify the people with Targaryen blood, even bastard sons of other Targaryens, and bring them into the fold to find a Dragon rider, which hints at the eventual Red Sowing.

What is the Red Sowing and how did it fit into House of the Dragon season 2 episode 5?

The Red Sowing relates to the term "Dragonseeds," or those who have the dragon's blood in them. They are also historically categorized as the only ones whom dragons accept as their riders.

While not all are pure-bred Targaryens, this "sowing" saw many such men and women step up to claim a dragon when Jacerys offered lands, knighthood, and wealth. However, as taming a dragon is hardly a daily activity, this sowing saw many deaths, leading to it being called the Red Sowing.

Ahead of House of the Dragon season 2 episode 5, the series had already introduced a few characters, who will eventually go on to take larger spots in the series. This includes Addam of Hull, Hugh the Hammer, and Ulf.

So, with House of the Dragon season 2 episode 5's ending, the show hinted that Rhaenyra's side will now be looking forward to capitalizing on their big dragons. This will inevitably lead to the sequence where Dragonseeds and others with the stomach for it will come forward and attempt to tame the dragons. This may happen in the next few episodes, but House of the Dragon season 2 episode 5 already kicked off the journey towards the Red Sowing.

House of the Dragon season 2 episode 5 also hinted at many other developments that will lead viewers to bigger events in the future, but for the sake of spoilers, we will not divulge the details.

The first five episodes of House of the Dragon season 2 are now streaming on Max.
