In a conversation aired on The Kardashians season 5 episode titled "This Is My Most Important Job," Kim Kardashian discussed challenges within the prison system with Gypsy Rose Blanchard.
Blanchard, who was convicted in 2015 for aiding in her mother's murder, shared her disappointment at being denied therapy during her incarceration. Blanchard revealed during the interview:
"When I got to prison, I asked them if I could get therapy and really deal with the trauma that I went through. I received a notice that I didn't qualify for one-on-one therapy."
Kardashian, an advocate for prison reform and pursuing a law degree, expressed astonishment at Blanchard's experience. Kardashian remarked:
"You would think that they would want to set you up and give you all of the tools that you would need to be as stable, to be as healed as possible, to come home into society.... Why wouldn't they set up all of these programs? It always blows my mind."
Kardashian reflected in a confessional segment. She said:
"Just the fact that she couldn't get therapy while in prison is a problem. Ultimately, we want to bring people home that are rehabilitated."
Gypsy Rose Blanchard opens up about prison experience
In a candid conversation with Kim Kardashian, Gypsy Rose Blanchard shared insights into her time behind bars, revealing moments of vulnerability.
Reflecting on her experience, Blanchard disclosed how she coped with emotions, sometimes resorting to playing her late mother's favorite song in private moments to allow herself to "cry and grieve." Blanchard explained:
"Sometimes I'd have to do it in the shower, too, because crying in prison — you're so vulnerable. Especially women. They can be so catty. Their first go-to is, 'Well, you killed her so why are you crying about it?' It's hard."
Blanchard was convicted of aiding in the murder of her mother Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard in the year 2015. There were major schemes involved where Dee Dee faked her daughter’s illnesses.
It forced Gypsy to take help from her then-boyfriend and go along with it to escape more years of alleged abuse. During her conversation with Kardashian, Blanchard regretted her mother’s death. Blanchard reflected:
"Now looking back on it, I'm like, I could have done things a lot differently, and it would have ended with my mother being in prison. Did she deserve prison? Yes."
Gypsy Rose Blanchard was later set free in December 2023 after having served 7 years of her 10-year sentence. She was convicted of second-degree murder and was therefore put behind bars. Her former boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, is still currently in prison for his involvement in the murder.
Blanchard is speculated to have Munchausen syndrome by proxy a situation in which a caregiver demonstrates symptoms of illnesses in another individual (mostly their children), in order to get attention.
In her trial, Gypsy Rose Blanchard stated that her mother used to take her for treatment for ailments that she never had, as recorded by Ozarks First. Blanchard also explained how her mother made her use a wheelchair and oxygen tank, even though she didn't need them.
Days before the episode aired, Gypsy Rose Blanchard announced in a YouTube video about her pregnancy with her boyfriend Ken Urker. Blanchard shared the news on Instagram, posting a photo captioned:
"We are proud to announce we are expecting our first child in January 2025 💗 announcement video on YouTube (link in bio)."
She is currently 11 weeks along and expecting the baby in January 2025.
