The latest season of Netflix's I Am a Killer covered many intriguing cases and criminals, but it seems that the case of Walter Triplett Jr struck a special chord in the hearts of the viewers. This is primarily because in the case of Triplett, though he killed someone, the severity of the punishment does not seem to align with whatever he did, especially in the given circumstances.
Walter Triplett Jr got involved in an altercation in a bar, and that eventually led to him punching a man and killing him in the process. He was sentenced to 18 years at first, but during his retrial, his punishment was only increased. His case was overseen by a predominantly white jury, and his previous convictions were used in abundance against him.
This led to a wide-ranging discussion on the social media platform Reddit, where many fans pointed out how Walter Triplett's conviction was perhaps not the ideal solution. User @broadsword844, for instance, said in this debate:
"As a white man and a former prosecutor, Walter acted in defense and they used his prior past convictions to convict him for defending his sister. Walter should have never even been charged. Police and prosecutor failed him and had their own story in mind instead of looking at the reality of the facts. I would have done the exact same as Walter."
Many other users had similar opinions.
"Walter was treated very unfairly and should not have been given such a long sentence. It was bullshit all around. However, it did rub me the wrong way that he seemed to have no remorse for what happened. Regardless, he shouldn't still be in jail,." another user said.
"The jury is one thing, but when the appeal was successful based on the judge misdirecting the jury, to have THE SAME JUDGE on the retrial is beyond me." another user pointed out.
"I'm glad I'm not the only one. It seems like the judge had a “I GOTCHA!!” moment and was dead set on giving him the max based on his past," another user said.
Perhaps with opinions like these rising, Netflix's I Am a Killer season 6 has achieved its goal.
Where is Walter Triplett Jr now?
After a bar brawl tragically ended in Michael Corrado's abrupt death, Walter Triplett Jr was arrested and charged. He went to trial on September 9, 2009. The prosecution claimed that Michael may not have been involved in the brawl and could have simply been a bystander.
The jury ultimately returned a guilty verdict, primarily because the prosecution highlighted Triplett's past convictions, which included assault. Walter was found guilty of felonious assault and was sentenced to 18 years.
Shortly after this, Walter's defense team filed for a retrial, claiming bias in the trial. The retrial was granted, but when it concluded, Walter Triplett Jr was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with the count of involuntary manslaughter added to the charges.
He is currently incarcerated at the Richland Correctional Institution in Mansfield, Ohio. His earliest parole date would be in 2029.
