The Manhattan Alien Abduction arrived on Netflix on October 30, 2024. This true crime documentary is based on Linda Napolitano’s alleged alien abduction in 1989, which has attracted some believers and several skeptics.
The Manhattan Alien Abduction features Linda Napolitano herself, who tells her side of the tale, and claims that the aliens abducted her from her residence. The documentary also features Carol Rainey, a skeptic, who was a part of this case. Carol’s ex-husband Budd Hopkins, a ufologist, took a keen interest in this case, and Carol also followed it closely via him.
Even though there were 23 witnesses of this alleged UFO abduction, a few of whom were featured in this documentary, it was not enough to convince netizens that Linda was telling the truth about the aliens abducting her.
A netizen who believed Linda Napolitano's claims to be false vouched for Carol (who also claimed Linda's allegations to be false in the documentary). The netizen stated that whatever Carol revealed about Linda was true and that Linda Napolitano may not have had such an experience and fabricated the entire story for fame and money. This netizen wrote:
"Just finished bingeing it. I’m not sure she had any experience. Who tells their 6 year old their nightmare was real and f*cks them up like that? The whole time watching I was expecting to hear that she and Budd were having an affair or something. Nothing real happened from her bulls*it story imho. And when challenged by Carol she responds with insults and threats..."
Several other Netizens also sympathized with Carol and felt bad about how her husband Budd Hopkins perhaps lied to her.
"Has she passed away? That’s sad. Her life was filled with liars and rejection. She looked so sad in this documentary. I hope the latter years of her life were better," a Netizen wrote.
"Out of everything discussed or seen in this documentary, Carols story is the saddest part. She was just an intelligent woman who trusted her husband and was dragged through years of bulls*it after. And her reaction to hearing the insults and threats by those other two morons?...She deserved way better. Rest in peace to Carol Rainey," another Carol sympathizer wrote.
"Probably her husband was in on it. She practically authored half of Budd's book. I reckon she saw $$$$ potential. TV show interviews, book interviews and other PA events," a Redditor speculated.
Some netizens also left critical reviews of The Manhattan Alien Abduction and wrote:
"I could not watch it. Started and it became annoying. I was not going to go further down that rabbit hole of BS," a viewer of the show wrote.
"My bull*hit meter went off, and stopped watching, when they kept repeating the same stuff over and over to span it through 3 episodes," another unhappy viewer commented.
There was a Redditor though, who went the other way and sparked some interest in the same thread by claiming:
"I know the witness that saw the abduction from the bridge. I can share some write ups he's done over the years if there's an interest!"
