John Krasinski confessed that he stole a prop from the set of The Office that he has "always lied" about. The actor, who appeared on his co-stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey’s rewatch podcast Office Ladies on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, revealed he took the Dundler Mifflin sigh on the last day of the set.
Recalling the last day of shooting, Krasinski explained that the series creator, Greg Daniels, whom the actor called an "evil genius," took the cast to Poor Richar's dive bar to shoot a scene. He explained that Daniels made the entire cast enter and exit the bar repeatedly. Remembering the last time Krasinski entered, he saw the entire crew gathered, he added —
"I'm choking up just talking about it, but then when you come back in and see your TV dad and all of your family waiting there and clapping, and (Greg) said, 'That's the end of The Office,' I think the color black came out of my mouth. It was just the scariest, most beautiful, horrific moment of my life."
Thirty minutes later, the IF director revealed that he had stolen the sign. Co-host Kinsey recalled him trying to put the sign in the back of his car, remarking it was her "favorite memory of our last day." John Krasinski promptly quipped, "I was like, don’t look over here!" He continued —
"It wasn't quite dark enough, so it just looked like I was putting a body in a car."
John Krasinski confessed he lied to the creator about stealing the Dunder Mifflin sign
The Office is a comedy show centered around a paper supply company, Dunder Mifflin, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. It starred Steve Carell (as Michael Scott), John Krasinski (as Jim Halpert), Jenna Fischer (as Pam Beesly), Rainn Wilson (as Dwight Schrute), and Angela Kinsey (as Angela Martin). The series ran for nine seasons, from 2005 to 2013.
John Krasinski confessed he "always lied" to Greg Daniels about taking the sign. He revealed Daniels approached him after the wrap party, wondering if he'd seen the sign. He stated —
"And then I remember Greg came up to me at the end party and was like, hey, we've been looking for the sign. Do you know where it is? And I it was literally like confessing to my dad. And I went, No. Nope, no. And he goes, oh, that was the one thing I wanted. And I was like, oh boy. Oh god"
Kinsey revealed that she never told anyone that she saw the A Quiet Place actor put the sign in his car. To which he promptly quipped, "Well, now you did. You told everyone."
This is not the first time John Krasinski has spoken about stealing a prop from the set. Back in October 2022, during his appearance on The Office Deep Dive with Brian Baumgartner, he told the host he "super shadily" stole the sign, adding that he felt "a little ashamed" doing it.
He explained that he looks back at it as a "bad high school kid decision." At the time, he told his The Office co-star Baumgartner that he got in touch with the show prop master, Phil Shea, after a letter fell off the sign.
John Krasinski is currently promoting his film IF, which was released on Friday, May 17, 2024.
